The Rain Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof just as the tide rises rapidly, covering the lower shelves Kevin was just inspecting.

The morning air is thick and humid, clinging to the skin as the wet season holds fast. The tide is steadily rising, water lapping rhythmically against the reinforced dock pilings. Inside the cottage, the smell of salt and drying sea beet hangs in the still air while the heavy atmosphere suggests a coming front.

Kevin — climb onto the dock and secure the wheelbarrow before the surge takes it

💭 peek at the thought
Water's coming up fast. Should've had another ten minutes on the starboard piling. Bolts looked thin but not gone — need to mark the tide line on the piling so I know where to start next low.

Kevin, the rain started and tide's coming in quick - let's get that wheelbarrow secured before the surge takes it.

walk quickly toward dock, climb onto dock structure and secure wheelbarrow to prevent it from being swept away by rising tide

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming down hard now - I can hear it starting on the tin roof. That's the tide rising fast too. I need to get inside before the surge hits the lower shelves.

Got it. Take the bow line — I'll grab the tools.

unbolt the 19mm socket from the torque wrench and toss it into the wheelbarrow, then grab the greenheart sister plates and the last 150mm through-bolt before the water reaches them

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving. Good. The surge'll hit the starboard piling hard with this wind behind it.

🌿 Jenny07:19

way, Kevin! The water is already at the pilings!

grab the bow line from the deck and secure it to the main cleat while watching the tide surge over the shelves.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast, but the water is faster. If those plates go under, we can't fix the dock before the storm. I need to get that line before the current catches it.

🔧 Kevin07:20

Kevin — grab the wheelbarrow handles and heave it up onto the dock planking, boots slipping on wet timber, then shove it hard against the cottage wall out of reach

💭 peek at the thought
Water's moving faster than I expected. Wind's pushing it hard from the west. The sister plates and bolt are heavy — if the surge takes the barrow now, we lose the hardware and the work window for another two weeks.

🌿 Jenny07:21

It's high for now, but help me get those plates inside before the porch gets flooded!

move to the wheelbarrow, wincing as the ankle shifts, and help him secure the greenheart plates against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's lucky he made it up, but the tide is coming in too fast. If that thing slides again, the tools are lost. I need to get the plates inside before the salt water takes them.
