The Weight of the Coming Storm

The evening air is stifling, and the smell of damp earth is strong as you both wait for the radio to crack to life.

The air is heavy and humid as the cloud cover thicken over the flat sky. The tide is rising steadily, lapping against the salt-crusted pilings of the dock. Inside the cottage, the smell of sea beet poultice and antiseptic lingers in the air while Jenny battles with the rising heat of her fever.

Radio's dead air on 2182. No sign of Mendez's boat.

Check the shortwave radio antenna connection on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's falling again, just like in '84 when we lost the *Providence* in the Gulf. Jenny's fever broke but the infection's been riding hard since yesterday. I need to check if the shortwave's picking up anything on Tom's frequency before we commit to the medevac plan.

🌿 Jenny07:55

Check the frequency again. The storm might be bouncing the signal.

Jenny winces as she shifts weight on the cot, pressing a damp cloth to her feverish forehead.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, the infection will reach my hip before they reach the island.

Scanning now. 2182, 4125, 6215. Tom's freq too.

Turn the radio dial through the marine bands, listening for any traffic or Mendez's call sign.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the bounce — ionosphere's thick with this humidity. But Mendez knows the window. If he's coming, he'll key up on the hour. I'll scan the band again and check Tom's old working frequency while I'm at it.

🌿 Jenny07:57

It's getting too hot. The clouds are going to break.

Jenny closes her eyes, listening to the white noise and the pulse in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Just static. The island is swallowing the signal whole.

Squall's close. Going to batten the shutters and check the dinghy lines. Back in five.

Walk to the east shutter, pull the 150mm through-bolt from the staging area, and drive it home through the greenheart sister plate into the joist.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the sky better than the barometer. That green-grey bruise on the western horizon — squall line building fast. Maybe twenty minutes before it hits. Radio's still dead. Need to secure the porch shutters and get the dinghy's storm anchor set proper before the wind shifts.

🌿 Jenny07:59

Watch the rain. The wind's shifting to the south.

Jenny reaches for the tin of seeds, her fingers trembling over the rusted metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing the house while I'm rotting from the inside.

🔧 Kevin07:59

Shutters first. Then the dinghy. The tin's not going anywhere.

Step off the porch onto the slick grass, pull the heavy cedar shutter across the east window, and sink the 150mm bolt through the pre-drilled plate into the joist with the 19mm socket and torque wrench.

💭 peek at the thought
South wind means the swell wraps round the point — puts the dock broadside to it. The mooring ring held last blow but the pilings took a beating. She's shaking. Fever or the tin? Either way, the seeds can wait. The shutters and the dinghy can't.

🌿 Jenny08:01

Just be careful with the lines. The tide is coming in too fast.

Jenny pulls the tin close to her chest, the cold metal seeping through her thin shirt.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bolt can hold everything together.
