← Day 807

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday work at dock and north ridge

Kevin is at the dock finishing the bow line re-lead and inspecting the north piling crack; Jenny is at the north cliffs sketching Carex and monitoring the slope.

Kevin works on the dinghy's bow line at the dock, securing the frayed warp before the swell builds up. Jenny heads up to the north ridge to monitor the soil, noting the weeping clay in the heavy, humid air.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the dock planks, the heavy weather line now holding the dinghy clean off the chocks. The north piling's hairline crack at the waterline weeps a thin line of silt-laden water with each swell impact. You have the 150mm stainless through-bolt, washers, and nyloc nut staged at the east shutter — one bolt left. The come-along is back in the workshop. The tide is still rising.

Kevin — walk to the east shutter and retrieve the 150mm stainless through-bolt, washers, and nyloc nut, then walk to the workshop and get the come-along

💭 peek at the thought
North piling's moving. Hairline crack at waterline weeping silt water means the clay's washing out from under the footing. One 150mm bolt left at the east shutter. Come-along in workshop. Tide still rising — if I wait for slack, the crack widens. If I move now, I can sister it with the greenheart plates staged on the dock before the next swell cycle peaks. Need to decide: burn the last bolt here or save it for the cottage northeast foundation where the trench shoring's holding by a thread.

🔧 Kevin09:28

Kevin — set up the come-along between the mooring ring and the north piling, tension it to pull the piling plumb, then drill and drive the 150mm stainless through-bolt through the greenheart sister plate into the piling below the rot line

💭 peek at the thought
Got the bolt and come-along. Greenheart sister plates are staged on the dock planking beside the north piling — two eight-foot straight-grain cores with pre-drilled bolt holes. Tide's still pushing. The crack weeps each time a swell hits. If I drive the bolt through the sister plate into sound timber below the rot line, it'll lock the piling to the new steel doubler plate I installed last month. But the come-along needs a solid anchor. The mooring ring's held by oak wedges in a splintered mortise — it's the only thing on this dock that hasn't moved. Risk using it as the come-along anchor. If the ring pulls, I lose the dinghy's storm warp too.

🔧 Kevin09:32

Kevin — release the come-along tension slowly, coil the line, and walk back toward the cottage to find Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
Come-along's tensioned. Mooring ring held — oak wedges bit deep. North piling pulled plumb, crack closed tight. Drilled the bolt hole through the greenheart sister plate and into the piling, 150mm stainless through-bolt driven home with washers and nyloc nut torqued to 35Nm. Sister plate bites solid timber below the rot line. Tide's at the turn, slack water in ten minutes. The piling's not going anywhere now. Still have the second greenheart core staged. Could sister the landward side too while the tide's low enough to work the base. But the come-along's maxed on this pull, and the mooring ring's mortise groaned. One more hard tension might pop the wedges. Dock's sound for now. Dinghy rides clean. Jenny's at the north cliffs. She'll want to know the dock held.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You sit on a flat rock above the north ridge transect line, notebook braced on your knee, wind tearing at the pages. The Carex stands bent low in the gusts, seed heads dark against the grey. Below you, the intercept trench you dug holds — water runs clear through the bitumen membrane into the diversion channel.

🌿 Jenny09:23

Stay put, just one more.

Sketch the detailed morphology of the *Carex* bracts and the way the roots anchor the weeping clay.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water stays channeled here, the soil won't wash out the garden beds.

🌿 Jenny09:27

Damn it.

Close the notebook, stand up with a grim, and start the slow descent back down to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the wind, and the salt air is getting everywhere.

🌿 Jenny09:31

I'm coming in, Kev!

Walk toward the cottage, shifting my weight to the good leg, watching the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin's still at the dock, a small silhouette against the grey water.
