Mid-morning Heat Soak

The sun beats down on the dry earth as the temperature climbs to 29°C. Jenny kneels in the dirt to inspect the sea beet seedlings while Kevin checks the stability of the new intercept trench.

The punishing sun beats down on the island as the dry spell continues. Kevin begins deepening the drainage trench near the cottage foundation to prepare for any sudden rains, while Jenny manages the pain in her ankle in the shade.

🌿 Jenny00:07

The trench looks too shallow, Kevin. It'll collapse the first it rains.

Jenny wipes sweat from her brow with a dusty forearm and sketches the specific curl of a sea beet leaf in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is going to bake these seedlings before the boat even arrives if the moisture doesn't hold.

Cut it another thirty centimetres. Backfill with the greenheart offcuts and the lime we turned.

walk to the intercept trench and start deepening the cut with the mattock, stacking the clay aside for the garden wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the depth. The clay here weeps when wet — saw it yesterday at the toe. If I don't cut it deeper now, I'm doing it in slurry with the tide at my back.

🌿 Jenny00:09

Be careful with the Edge, the soil here is too sandy to hold a vertical cut like that.

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing as her ankle throbs, and walks to the rain tank to check the water level.

💭 peek at the thought
If he digs any deeper, he'll hit the water table and we'll lose the whole drainage.

Benching it. Two-to-one slope on the sand, vertical in the clay.

reshape the trench walls with the mattock, cutting back the upper sand into a bench while leaving the clay face vertical, tossing spoil onto the garden wall line

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side again. The sand layer's thin here — maybe fifteen centimetres over blue clay. If I bench it instead of cutting vertical, the trench holds.

🌿 Jenny00:11

The clay's going to dry and crack if we don't stabilize it with something soon.

way taps the side of the water tank, notes the 386 litres, and sighs, rubbing her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the bench, but that clay face is going to crumble in this heat.

🔧 Kevin00:11

Bitumen membrane in the shed. Lay it in the trench bottom and up the clay face before backfill. Greenheart shims to pin it.

walk to the generator shed, retrieve the heavy canvas roll with bitumen membrane remnant, carry it back to the trench

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the crack pattern on the north ridge. The lime we turned yesterday helps, but the clay needs binding before it bakes. Greenheart shims and the bitumen membrane from the shed — if I lay it in the trench bottom and up the clay face, it'll slow the moisture loss.

🌿 Jenny00:13

I'll get the shims, but don't pull the membrane too tight.

Jenny limps toward the shed, her weight heavy on her good leg, to find the greenheart offcuts.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's following a plan, but the heat is punishing us both.

🔧 Kevin00:13

Slack in the folds. Pin the edges, let the middle float.

unroll the bitumen membrane along the trench bottom, pressing it into the clay face with the mattock blade, leaving gentle folds every half metre

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the membrane tears if it's drum-tight when the ground shifts. Let it breathe a little — slack in the folds, pinned at the edges.
