Evening Cool-down

The sun finally begins to dip as the brutal heat breaks slightly. Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch to share the evening breeze as the tide recedes.

Kevin and Jenny spent the day resting at the cottage to avoid the intense heat. Jenny's ankle remains swollen and painful, requiring another dose of antibiotics while Kevin monitors the water levels and prepares for the upcoming supply boat arrival.

🌿 Jenny00:45

The tank is full enough for now. I can't get to the ridge today, Kevin.

Lean back against the stone wall, rubbing the swollen ankle with a wince.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is a drum of pain, and I'm too tired to even hold the pencil properly.

🔧 Kevin00:46

Tank's good. Dock's good. Ridge can wait — beets aren't going anywhere in this heat.

walk to the stove and lift the lid, checking the corned beef pot

💭 peek at the thought
She's admitting defeat on the ridge. That ankle's worse than she let on this morning. I should've pushed harder for her to stay put, but she doesn't take orders. Tank's fine at 371. Dock held through high tide. The real work today was the foundation trench and the north slope — both done. She did her part with the sea beet data. Now we eat.

🌿 Jenny00:47

It's not just the beets. It's the morphology before they go.

Look out at the half-cleared garden bed, sighing as the smell of salt air hits the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, but the weeds in the garden are winning another inch while I sit here.

🔧 Kevin00:48

Your sketches from the northern shelf are done. Salt gland gradients across three elevations. That's the morphology that matters.

ladle corned beef and broth into two tin mugs, set one on the porch rail for her

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The morphology window closes with the seed set. But her ankle's hot to touch, the swelling past the brace line. Pushing it today would've cost her a week. I've seen men lose legs to less on ships with doctors aboard. Here there's just us.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:49

The gradients are clear, but the soil is still too acidic near the ridge.

Reach for the mug, fingers trembling slightly, and take a sip of the hot broth.

💭 peek at the thought
He sees the data, I just see the seeds I'm too scared to lose.

🔧 Kevin00:50

The lime's turned. Give it a week and the rain to wash it down. You've got the data. Rest the ankle tonight — no arguments.

settle onto the porch step with my own mug, blow steam off the top

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracked the pH shifts. Lime beds at 6.8 to 7.0, untreated at 5.5 to 5.8. The ridge soil's fighting back. She knows every centimetre of that slope better than I know the Yanmar's bearing clearances. And she's shaking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:51

A week is a long time for an infection to sit like this.

Prop the ankle up on a wooden crate, watching the pulse in the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain doesn't come, the lime just sits there on the surface.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:52

The course finished yesterday. If it's spreading past the marked line by morning, we crack the buried cache. Fourteen tablets each. Doxycycline and metronidazole.

set my mug down, lean forward to check the pen marks on her ankle in the fading light

💭 peek at the thought
She's naming it. Infection. Not swelling, not inflammation — infection. The antibiotics finished yesterday. Five days of doxycycline and metronidazole. If it's tracking, we're past oral pills. I've seen sepsis take a man in thirty-six hours on a ship with a radio and a helicopter on standby. Here there's the supply boat in nine days. If it comes.

🌿 Jenny00:53

I hope we don't have to Use it. The ankle is angry enough.

Trace the edge of the redness with a shaking finger, watching for any movement past the ink.

💭 peek at the thought
Fourteen tablets is a lot of medicine to lose if the boat is late again.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:54

It's past the line.

pull the headlamp from my pocket, click it on, beam narrow on her ankle — measure the spread with my thumb against the ink mark

💭 peek at the thought
The ink line I drew this morning — it's been crossed. The redness has crept past it, maybe a centimetre. Hot skin. The pulse there is visible, thready. She's running a low fever; I felt it when she handed me the mug. The cache is two days' walk round the coast or a risky dinghy run at night. Nine days until the boat. If the lymphatics take it, she won't have nine hours.

🌿 Jenny00:55

way we open the tin. I can't wait another week for the rain.

Close my eyes against the bright light, letting the throb rhythm sync with my heart.

💭 peek at the thought
It's moving. I can feel the heatradi off the skin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:56

The cache isn't a decision. It's what happens next. You take the first dose now. With broth.

stand, headlamp still on her ankle, and walk to the kitchen shelf for the oilcloth bundle

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the antibiotic cache. She means the lime. The soil. The ridge. She's trying to bargain with the island while her blood pumps poison toward her heart. The red line's crossed by fifteen millimetres. Maybe twenty. The cache is buried behind the generator shed — fourteen tablets each, sealed in oilcloth. I put them there three months ago against exactly this. She knows they're there. She's choosing the garden over the cache.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:57

I'll take it. The garden is already failing anyway.

Swallow the pill with a heavy gulp, feeling the heat settle in my stomach.

💭 peek at the thought
If we start now, there's no going back to the charts.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:58

The garden's not failing. It's waiting. Like the rest of us.

sit back down on the step, pick up my mug, drink the cooling broth in three swallows

💭 peek at the thought
She took it. Good. The doxycycline goes down. Fourteen days' worth if we need it. Metronidazole too. The garden isn't failing — the tomato stakes are driven, the shade cloth's holding, the lime's turned. She's tired and febrile and talking rot. Let her. The pills are in her. Now she needs sleep and fluids and to keep the ankle above her heart. I'll wake her for the metronidazole in twelve hours. And the next dose after that. And the next.
