Midday respite

Kevin and Jenny meet at the porch as the sun begins to dip. The air is still heavy, and the tide is nearing its lowest point.

Kevin checked the water levels and inspected the dock for any signs of movement during the low tide. Jenny stayed at the cottage to manage her swollen ankle, documenting the sea beet progress before the midday heat intensified.

🌿 Jenny00:25

The tank is still over three-hundred litres. I checked it twice.

Jenny leans back against the stone wall, wincing as she shifts her weight away from her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming, and I can't even look at the ridge without feeling the pulse in my skin.

Good. That's good.

lean against the porch post, arms crossed, watching the tide line on the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
Three-seventy-seven is good. Three-seventy-eight yesterday. We're not bleeding water anywhere. The northeast foundation patch is holding.

🌿 Jenny00:27

It's enough for now. I'm not making it to the ridge today.

Jenny opens her notebook to a blank page and traces the outline of a sea beet leaf with a shaky finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just a number, but every drop is a countdown until the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin00:28

Ridge isn't going anywhere. Beets'll wait.

step off the porch, walk to the tank, run a hand along the cool metal side checking the water line by feel

💭 peek at the thought
She's disappointed. She wanted that transect. The heat took it out of her — took it out of both of us. Ankle's not right.

🌿 Jenny00:29

Everything waits on this island until it doesn't anymore.

Jenny closes the notebook shut with a soft thud and stares at the poultice on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
They don't wait, the salt just eats them if I'm not careful.

🔧 Kevin00:30

The transect's data, not a rescue. One day won't change the trend line.

turn back from the tank, lean on the porch railing beside her, not looking at the ankle

💭 peek at the thought
That's the truth of it. Some things wait. The transect, the garden wall, the letter in my pocket. Others don't — the tide, the barometer, an ankle turning septic. She's thinking about which is which.

🌿 Jenny00:31

I've been documenting the decay for months, Kevin. The ridge data is in my notebook—

Jenny pulls the waterproof-cased notebook from her jacket pocket and places it carefully on the railing between you.

💭 peek at the thought
The trend line doesn't bleed when the infection spreads.

🔧 Kevin00:32

I'll walk it tomorrow. First light. Before the heat.

pick up the notebook, flip it open to the marked pages, scan the grid references and gland density notes with the practiced eye of someone who's read her handwriting for eleven months

💭 peek at the thought
She's handing me the record. Not asking me to do the walk — giving me the data so it exists somewhere besides her head. Smart. Careful. She plans for the thing she won't say out loud.
