The Morning Heat Inspection

Kevin and Jenny stand at the edge of the new intercept trench as the onshore breeze picks up. Jenny checks the soil moisture near the garden expansion while Kevin monitors the stability of the freshly-cut earth.

The morning air is still and dry, though a light onshore breeze carries the scent of salt. The tide is currently high, lapping against the reinforced dock pilings and keeping the lower path submerged. Inside the cottage, the heat is already beginning to rise, and the sound of scratching behind the pantry shelves suggests rat activity.

Toe's dry. Chalk seam weeps on the push. Another tide cycle'll tell.

Crouch at the trench edge, press fingertips into the mortar line where it meets the chalk seam, feeling for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
She moves different today. Less guarding the ankle. The trench toe is holding — slate chips and lime mortar took the tide push clean — but that chalk seam at forty centimeters still weeps when the water rises. Need to watch it through the next spring cycle before I call it done.

🌿 Jenny01:09

It's not holding. The water table is too high.

Jenny shifts her weight as she kneels beside him, digging a small trowel into the soil three inches down to check the consistency.

💭 peek at the thought
If the seam weeps now, the drainage is failing and the whole slope will slide by next storm.

🔧 Kevin01:10

Table's high. Spring tide pushed it. Mortar holds the face but pressure's underneath.

Pull the trowel from her hand gently, sink it deeper at the trench bottom — six inches, eight — watching water seep into the cut at the chalk line.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The water table's riding high — spring tide pushed it up into the chalk seam and it hasn't dropped back. The mortar's holding the face but the pressure's underneath. Need deeper cut-off or a French drain behind the shoring. Or both.

🌿 Jenny01:11

Then we need to wider the intercept. We can't just watch it bleed out.

Jenny wipes the mud from her hands on her jeans and reaches for her notebook to sketch the cross-section of the seepage.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure is building behind that joint, the whole ridge is going to take the garden with it.

🔧 Kevin01:12

Wider takes shoring we haven't got. Slate's gone. Greenheart offcuts on the dock could drive sheet-pile — if the auger bit holds.

Stand, wipe mud on trousers, walk to the garden wall footings and kick the lowest course testing for movement.

💭 peek at the thought
Wider means more shoring, more slate, more lime. We're low on slate chips — used the last on this run. Could strip the old garden wall footings but that robs Peter to pay Paul. Or drive sheet-piling with the greenheart offcuts staged on the dock. Deeper cut-off wall, backfilled with clay and lime. She's thinking cross-section. I'm thinking materials and tide windows.

🌿 Jenny01:13

We'll have to check the auger first. If the bit is dull, we're just guessing.

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing as her ankle throbs, and follows him toward the dock to grab the tool kit.

💭 peek at the thought
If we use the offcuts, we need to Drive them deep enough to bypass the water-table pressure.

🔧 Kevin01:14

Bit's bent. Shank twisted on a root. Might file true for clay. Won't touch chalk.

Climb the dock planking to the generator shed, pull the auger from the rack, sight down the bit checking the twist.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side still. The doxy course finished but the metronidazole's got two days left. Ankle's not right. She won't say it. The auger bit twisted last week on a root at the west wall — shank's bent, handle cracked. Might still cut clay if I file the flutes true. If not, we're hand-digging with the mattock and spade. Through chalk seam. At spring tide.

🌿 Jenny01:15

Then we extend the trench further into the ridge. We need a path for that water somewhere.

Jenny leans against the whitewashed stone of the cottage, watching him work while she tries to ignore the heat in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If he can't reach the chalk, the water will just keep building pressure behind the wall.
