A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The heat is heavy and still as the tide rises against the dock pilings. Kevin wipes sweat from his brow, checking the water level in the tank one last time. Inside the cottage, Jenny sits on the edge, her ankle throbbing in the dry heat, the smell of salt and sea beet poultice filling the air.

🔧 Kevin03:49

Morning. Coffee's hot.

Pour two mugs, set one on the table beside her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's climbing again, but that drainage fix felt solid. Should've asked Jenny about her letter last night. Now she's got coffee brewing and that look like she's deciding whether to tell me something or keep it buried.

🌿 Jenny03:50

Thanks, Kevin.

Jenny reaches for the mug, wrapping both hands around the warm ceramic, winces slightly as she shifts her weight off her left foot.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks as tired as I feel. My ankle is throbbing with every heartbeat.

🔧 Kevin03:50

Ankle giving you trouble?

Sit opposite her, roll up my sleeve to check the bandage on my own forearm from the crate salvage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle worse today. The poultice isn't holding the infection back like she thinks.

🌿 Jenny03:51

Just a bit swollen. The heat is getting to the joint.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the coffee, eyes drifting to the half-weeded garden through the screen door.

💭 peek at the thought
It's more than just trouble, but I don't want to admit how bad it looks today.

🔧 Kevin03:53

Garden's waiting on you too, I reckon.

Stand and walk toward the screen door, hand on the frame to steady myself.

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting again. That garden still needs attention, but she's not seeing it the way I do.

🌿 Jenny03:55

I know. I'll get to the north slope plots eventually.

Jenny sets her mug down with a heavy thud, leaning on the edge of the table as she tries to stand up with a sharp intake of breath.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always waiting, and I'm always failing to keep up with the salt and weeds.

🔧 Kevin03:55

Sit back down.

Step over, put a hand on her shoulder to guide her back into the chair.

💭 peek at the thought
That wasn't "a bit swollen." She's hiding how bad it is.

🌿 Jenny03:57

I'm sitting, I'm sitting.

Jenny sinks back into the chair, her head dropping as she stares at her bandaged ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even stand across the kitchen without the world tilting. Pathetic.

🔧 Kevin03:58

Want me to check it?

Move to the kitchen table, pull out my medical kit, check if the gauze is still clean.

💭 peek at the thought
She's fighting pain and something else I can't name.

🌿 Jenny03:59

Yeah. Please. It's pulsing.

Jenny sighs heavily, slowly extending her leg out toward the table, wincing as the movement catches the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
It's probably leaking through again, and I'm too tired to even unwrap it myself.

🔧 Kevin04:00

"Pulsing" how? Show me.

Remove the bandage carefully, inspect the wound with my penlight.

💭 peek at the thought
Pulsing sounds bad. Too late for simple infection.

🌿 Jenny04:01

Every time I move. It feels like... tight.

Jenny bites her lip, watching my hands work as the sticky gauze peels away from the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
It feels like a second heart beating right under the skin, hot and angry.
