Midday Stasis

The sun is at its peak, and the lack of breeze makes the island feel like a silent, oven.

The heat is a physical weight over the island, shimmering between the sand and the waves. Kevin and Jenny retreat from the dock as the midday sun becomes brutal, the tide receding to expose the salt-crusted base of the pilings and the heavy crate wedged in the rocks.

🔧 Kevin04:45

(to self, quiet) Too hot for the dock.

Walk back toward the cottage, boots slow on the sand. Stop at the radio shack first — check the shortwave, see if the aerial insulator held through the night heat.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is brutal today. Can feel it in the bones of the dock planks. Wood's too dry for precision work — bolts won't hold in timber this parched. Should wait for evening cool-down or tide shift. The foundation leak at the cottage needs the bitumen membrane, but applying it in this heat? It'll cure wrong. Radio first. Always radio at dawn. Missed the French broadcast window. Have to catch the evening one.

🌿 Jenny04:47

Jenny — sit on the porch steps, leaning back and propping my swollen ankle up, watching the heat shimmer over the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is a physical weight, and if I don't get these seeds in the ground soon, they will just rot in the tin.

(softly, from the dock) Jenny. Your foot... it's puffed up.

Walk slowly up the jetty planks, sand sticking to bare feet. Stop two feet away, hands in pockets.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been sitting there since I left. Ankle looks worse - more swollen, the poultice probably soaked through. Should have brought more clean gauze. The barometer's dropping fast, but she hasn't moved. That's not right.

🌿 Jenny04:51

It's just the heat, Kevin. Everything is swollen today.

Shift my eyes to the horizon, tracing the line where the sea meets the shimmering air.

💭 peek at the thought
way doesn't need to say it; I can feel the pulse thumping in my skin from here.

🔧 Kevin04:53

(crouching down, voice low) Jenny. The barometer dropped eight points since dawn. That's not just heat.

Pull out the barometer from my pocket, hold it out between us in the heat shimmer.

💭 peek at the thought
She's lying. The swelling's gotten worse since yesterday. And her eyes are fixed on the horizon like she's trying to read something in the shimmer. The barometer dropped another three points while I was on the dock. She knows the pressure's falling.

🌿 Jenny04:54

I saw the needle. It's moving fast.

Look down at the glass, then flinch away as the throbbing in my own catches the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the air is heavy enough to swallow, and I can't even get off this porch.

🔧 Kevin04:55

(standing, brushing sand from knees) The boat's holding. Checked the manifest this morning - they're still on schedule for three days out.

Head back toward the cottage, but stop at the garden wall to check if the shade cloth's holding against the salt stress. Need to know if the tomatoes need emergency sheltering.

💭 peek at the thought
She saw it. Felt it too. Eight points in four hours - that's a proper weather change coming. The French broadcasts will go dead soon, and I need to know if the supply boat's holding position or if we need to batten down before the wind hits. Should have checked the radio at first light.

🌿 Jenny04:56

I hope they are.

Watch him walk to the garden, then lean my head back against the hot wood of the cottage wall.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. If the boat doesn't come, I'm out of antibiotics and this infection will keep winning.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:56

(without turning, voice carrying over the heat) Radio check at sunset. I'll catch the French marine forecast.

Move along the garden wall, checking each tomato plant's leaves for salt burn. The shade cloth's taut but the corners are lifting - coconut crab got at the stakes again. Pull a spare oak stake from the bundle, drive it deep.

💭 peek at the thought
She didn't say "we'll be fine." She said "I hope they are." There's a difference. She's watching the horizon like she's calculating something - distance, time, what comes if the boat doesn't come. The trust letter's in her pocket. She's been carrying it for days.
