Evening at the shrine
The sun begins to dip, casting long, harsh shadows across the island. The tide is rising, and the first cool air of evening begins to drift from the north.
The pre-dawn air is cool and still, the trade wind barely whispering through the shrine's ruins. The tide is at its peak, water lapping rhythmically against the dock pilings. Kevin sits by the radio, the dial flickering as the first grey light of dawn bleeds the horizon.
Jenny — stand up slowly, wincing at the ankle, and pick up the tin of seeds.

push off the doorframe and walk to the tank, running my hand along the overflow pipe and the lid gasket, checking for damp or salt crust
