← Day 821

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the garden

Midday work split

Kevin is at the keeper's cottage checking the shortwave aerial; Jenny is at the garden excavating the north slope drainage trench.

Kevin heads to the shore to inspect the shortwave aerial while the high tide makes access to the base difficult. Jenny works in the garden, attempting to dig a trench to prevent saltwater intrusion before the tide turns.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You stand at the cottage porch with the spare ceramic insulator and coax cable, watching the tide ebb toward low water. The shattered aerial hangs slack from the mast, insulator filed and ready. You'll need to climb the mast base to re-tension and splice the lead before the supply boat window.

Kevin — walk to the radio mast base with spare insulator and coax cable

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping fast. Aerial's slack but the mast base is solid. Need to get up there before the water pulls back far enough to expose the coax run — salt eats copper quick once it's wet and drying. Spare insulator's filed clean, coax is new from the crate. One climb, one splice, done.

Kevin — test shortwave receive on 2182, 16, and 70

💭 peek at the thought
Mast climb went clean. New insulator seated, coax spliced and taped with self-amalgamating. Lead runs clean to the wall penetration. Aerial's tensioned — slight bow to the south-west stay, takes the load off the ceramic. Radio's warm on receive. Static on 2182, 16, 70. Nothing moving but atmospherics. Supply boat's due in three days at high tide. Two-hour window. They'll call if they're coming.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You kneel at the north slope trench with the mattock, the marked soil pockets behind you. Salt water pools at the trench base where the excavation isn't deep enough yet. The intercept channel needs another half-meter of depth before the next high tide pushes brine into the garden beds.

🌿 Jenny07:21

Goddamn tide...

kneel at the trench base and dig with the mattock, striking at a 45-degree angle to carve deeper into the saturated clay, scraping salty soil into the pools while working toward the marked instability line behind me

💭 peek at the thought
The clay's already saturated here - I can feel it giving way under my boots. That tension crack runs deeper than the map showed. Half a meter more and I'll hit the weeping zone.

🌿 Jenny07:25

way there.

stand up slowly, wiping sweat and grit from my brow with the back of a hand, then lean heavily on the driftwood cane to inspect the progress of the drainage line

💭 peek at the thought
My back is screaming and the salt-wind is getting into my eyes. If I don't finish this trench now, the heirloom seeds are dead before they even sprout.
