A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin positioned the wheelbarrow at the north piling and began the sister plate installation, but the last 150mm stainless through-bolt seized in the pre-drilled hole and the threads stripped under torque, leaving the joint unsecured. Jenny inspected the salt crystallization on the piling and confirmed the damage extends deeper than 60cm, then started the north ridge garden planting and drainage trench work, using the remaining water test strips to verify soil pH improvement in the treated beds.

Kevin — walk down to the dock with the wheelbarrow

💭 peek at the thought
The wheelbarrow's still loaded at the dock — greenheart plates, the last 150mm bolt, torque wrench. Tide's falling now. Two hours of work window left before the water covers the north piling mortise. Jenny's up at the spring with the pH kit. Radio check at 2000. Need to move.

Watch the edge on that way, the wood is still soft there.

Stand up slowly from the porch chair, wiping grit from my palms, and watch him go.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving the heavy stuff again; my back is still screaming from the mattock work.

Marked it. Three chalk lines. I know where not to put weight.

push the wheelbarrow down the porch steps and across the grass to the dock, positioning it beside the north piling where the greenheart sister plates are staged

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Always watching the structural flaws I already know about. The east stringer's been soft since the January storm — I probed it, marked it, sistered it temporary. Permanent fix waits on dry wood and time we don't have.

🌿 Jenny08:53

Don't leave the plates on the grass yet; the moisture is coming up from the soil.

Walk down to the dock, favoring my ankle, and crouch to inspect the salt crystallization on the piling.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks chalk lines stop the rot, but the salt is already eating the heart of that greenheart.
