Evening at the shrine

They meet at the cottage porch as the light slants low, Kevin wiping grease from his hands, Jenny leaning on her driftwood cane. Together they walk the ridge path to the ring of weathered stones, the barometer rising steady at 1034 hPa, the tide low and the sea calm.

Kevin kept watch along the ridge while Jenny dug a secondary overflow channel east of the primary trench. The stones remained stable and the channel was cleared to the spring line before the tide turned.

North ridge crack's still growing. Jenny marked it four meters past her line yesterday. We'll look at it from the shrine — better angle.

💭 peek at the thought
The bolt failure this afternoon sits in my fingers — the way the threads just surrendered. Should've known better than to trust the last one without checking the tap first. But the tide waited for no one.

🌿 Jenny08:57

The crack's extended to four point two meters now. I marked fresh soil pockets at the third cairn - they're still stable but weeping clay. The drainage trench held through the last high tide, but I should dig that secondary overflow before we lose another growing season.

walk to the third cairn and dig soil sample from pocket, then check drainage trench outlet with pH strip

💭 peek at the thought
The crack extends another meter past yesterday's mark. At this rate, by the time the supply boat arrives, the ridge will be unstable enough to trigger a slide toward the garden beds. I need to verify the soil pockets I mapped are still holding, check if the drainage trench overflow channel needs emergency digging, and confirm the lime amendments are preventing salt damage in the new planting rows.

Trench held. That's something. The overflow — where you thinking?

stand at the shrine stones, looking north along the ridge toward the crack line

💭 peek at the thought
She's precise. Numbers, measurements, the crack at 4.2 not "four meters past." The trench held. She's already thinking the next step — secondary overflow. My hands still smell of metal shavings and greenheart dust.

🌿 Jenny08:59

East of the trench, about where the ridge starts to drop. I'll dig it now while the barometer's holding at 1034 - if it drops five points before tomorrow, storm surge could push salt water through faster than the drainage can handle.

retrieve shovel from wheelbarrow and begin digging secondary overflow channel 1.5 meters east of primary trench, angling it toward spring line

💭 peek at the thought
The secondary overflow needs to be dug 1.5 meters east of the primary trench, sloping toward the spring line before the ridge drops sharply. If I don't get it done before the next high tide, all those grandmother's seeds I just planted will drown in the salt pockets I mapped yesterday.

Want me to take a turn?

shift weight, watching her dig, the driftwood cane planted beside the trench

💭 peek at the thought
She reads the barometer like I read a pressure gauge. 1034 holding means hours, maybe a day. She's buying time for the ridge. The shovel bites clay — heavy work for a bad ankle.

🌿 Jenny09:01

I've got it. way keep an eye on the way for me.

wipe sweat from brow with a forearm and continue digging the narrow channel with precision strokes

💭 peek at the thought
If he helps, he'll just pack the sides and ruin the grade I spent three hours perfecting. I need to get the angle exactly right or the water won't flow.

🔧 Kevin09:01

Watching.

turn toward the ridge path, scanning the cairn line and the slope below for movement or new slippage

💭 peek at the thought
She said "way" twice. Tired. Or the fever's still sitting low. The cane's close but she's not using it to lever herself up — just digging. The barometer's still rising. We have time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:03

way tell me if the stones move.

kneel in the dirt to level the edge of the trench with her hand, checking the steady slope toward the spring.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every scoop, but if this drainage isn't right, the salt will kill everything grandmother left me before the seeds even sprout.

🔧 Kevin09:03

Stones are still.

glance back at the weathered stone ring, checking each upright against the horizon line

💭 peek at the thought
"Way" again. Not "wait." She means the shrine stones behind me. The ring. She's checking if the ridge is shifting under her while she digs into it. Smart. The stones are the tell.

🌿 Jenny09:05

We have one more hour before the water rises.

use the shovel to clear the loose earth from the channel, ensuring the path to the spring is unobstructed.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. If the ridge holds for tonight, I might actually have a chance to finish the garden before the boat comes. The tide is turning, and I can feel the humidity in the air.
