Evening Prep and Tide Watch

The sun begins to dip as the trade wind shifts slightly. Kevin and Jenny gather for the evening meal.

The heat is oppressive as the dry season peaks, leaving the island silent and stifling. Jenny rests in the shade of the cottage managing her aching ankle while Kevin monitors the widening north ridge crack. The tide is receding, exposing the rocky flats of the southern shoreline.

🌿 Jenny11:05

It's too hot to talk.

Eat a small portion of tinned mackerel while avoiding Kevin's eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
way own is throbbing in time with the heat, and the way tastes like salt and old oil.

Eat the rest. You need it.

slide the tin of corned beef across the table toward her, then pour coffee into both mugs from the pot on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's not eating much. Ankle's draining her. The silence isn't the heat — it's the radio call to Tom she hasn't told me about.

🌿 Jenny11:07

I'm not hungry.

Push the tin back toward him and stare at the sketch of the ridge crack.

💭 peek at the thought
he thinks food fixes the rot in my bone and the hollow feeling in my chest.

🔧 Kevin11:07

You talked to Tom last night. What did he say about the ridge?

sit down opposite her, wrap both hands around my mug, wait

💭 peek at the thought
She's fixed on that sketch. The crack past the stability line. She talked to Tom about it and won't say what he told her. The antibiotics are done. The ankle should be improving. She's not eating. She's not sleeping right. She's waiting for something.

🌿 Jenny11:09

He said the boat is on time if the weather holds.

Take a slow sip of the lukewarm coffee and look at the shadows lengthening on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Tom doesn't know anything about the soil moving, he only knows the schedule.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:09

And the ridge? What did he say about the crack?

keep my eyes on her face, not the sketch

💭 peek at the thought
That's not what I asked. She answered the supply boat question, not the ridge question. Tom would've read the GPS marks she sent. He knows what 4.2 metres past the stability line means. He'd have said something about evacuation or reinforcement or both. She's filtering.

🌿 Jenny11:11

He didn't ask about the geology, Kevin. Just the supplies.

Close the notebook shut with a soft thud and rub my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
he doesn't see the way the earth is giving out, he just sees a map.

🔧 Kevin11:11

You sent the GPS marks?

set the mug down slow, not looking at the notebook

💭 peek at the thought
Tom didn't ask about the geology. My brother. The one who taught me to read a coastline at twelve. He didn't ask about the ridge crack that's eating the island out from under us. He asked about supplies. Either Jenny didn't send the coordinates, or she did and he ignored them. Both sit wrong.
