The Midday Heat Peak

The tide has risen significantly, submerging the lower parts of the dock. Kevin and Jenny retreat to the shade of the cottage as the temperature hits its peak, the air heavy and still.

Kevin attempted to extract the broken 16mm tap from the north piling mortise but the left-hand drill bit snapped off in the tap, leaving both broken tools lodged in the hole. Jenny successfully planted grandmother's heirloom tomato, pepper, and sea beet seeds in the pre-digged amended soil holes with charcoal layer, and documented the north ridge crack extension with precise GPS coordinates and detailed soil pocket sketches.

Low tide's our window tomorrow. Drill oversize, tap, bolt the sisters home. Today we wait.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's brutal today. Tide's eating the dock fast. We got the tap out and the spruce split — that's the win. North piling still needs the oversize tap and sister plates bolted. Can't do it until the water drops again. Jenny's ankle has to be throbbing in this heat. She won't say it.

The tide is too high anyway. If the boat doesn't come, we're out of salt tomorrow.

way on the porch step, pull out the own, and begin drawing the precise morphology of a sea beet leaf to ignore the pain in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is throbbing in time with the tide, a sharp, hot pulse that makes me want to scream silently. Kevin talks about the window like time is a linear gift, but the salt air is eating the dock and the infection is eating me. I have these seeds in the tin—grandmother's life work—and I'm terrified that if I plant them now in this heat, the island will just swallow them whole. I need to finish the garden, but my body feels like it's made of lead.

We've got the sea beet. And the limpets. Salt in them if we boil it down. Not much, but enough for a cure on a few fish.

lean back against the porch post, watching the tide creep up the dock pilings

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing to stay still. Salt's a real problem — no salt, no curing, no preserving the mackerel or the corned beef if the tins go. The supply boat's due in ten days per the schedule, but the barometer's falling. Could be weather holding them up. Could be something else. She knows the timetable as well as I do.

🌿 Jenny10:47

Boiling shells won't stop the erosion, Kevin. We need the boat.

sit silently in the shade, staring at the water line while I sketch the crack extension on the ridge in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for a way, a way to scrape life out of the rot. Limets won't fix the fact that the north ridge is literally moving. I'm looking at these seeds in the tin and wondering if I'm just stubborn enough to see them through the winter.

🔧 Kevin10:52

Boat's due in ten days. Barometer's falling. Could be blown off station. Could be broke down. We'll know in three days if they make the Wednesday high tide window.

pull the notebook from my pocket, flip to the ridge survey page, add today's tide mark alongside the GPS coordinates

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Boiling shells is patchwork. The boat brings diesel, salt, the new water test kit, the letter from the trust I haven't opened proper. And the crack on the ridge — 4.2 metres past her line now. If the boat doesn't come, we decide: stay and ride it, or load the dinghy and cross two days of open water. She's already run the numbers. I can see it in how she holds the pencil.

🌿 Jenny10:53

Mark the tide line on the north ridge cairn too. If this crack keeps moving, I need to know before we're trapped.

walk to the garden and kneel in the amended soil, pressing grandmother's tomato seeds into the earth with my good hand while the ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
He took my notebook and wrote in it without asking—always doing that, marking what matters with his steady hand while mine shakes. Ten days is an eternity when the infection burns and the ridge threatens to give way. I can't wait for the boat to rescue me from my own body.
