A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The heavy heat and still air make physical labor nearly impossible today. Kevin checks the cottage seals while finds the high humidity keeps the brushwood too heavy to move. Jenny monitors her ankle in the shade, as the lack of breeze prevents any progress.

Generator's half tank. Topping it off before the weather decides for us.

walk to the generator shed, check fuel level, top off from the sound jerry can if needed

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels smaller with the storm shutters dogged. Air's thick. Jenny's on the porch with the VHF and her notebook. Need to check the generator fuel and the dinghy lines before the tide peaks — barometer's holding at 980 but the swell lag's real. And the trimethoprim decision sits in my pocket.

Don't spill any on the grass, the humidity is high enough.

sits at the kitchen table, picks up the seed tin, and traces the rust on the lid with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the machine while the rot is eating the wood under our feet.

🔧 Kevin09:05

Careful with that tin. The salt's eating through faster than it looks.

set down the wrench, walk to the kitchen table, kneel beside her, trace the other side of the tin with a calloused finger

💭 peek at the thought
The seed tin's E-marked, same as the one from the crate. She knows. Always does. The humidity's climbing again, and her thumb's leaving rust traces like a fingerprint.

I know. I'm holding onto it.

looks down at the tin, then at his hand, her fingers tightening slightly on the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
It's the only thing left of her that hasn't decayed yet.

🔧 Kevin09:06

The supply boat's due in three days. High tide window. Two hours.

stay kneeling, thumb brushing the corroded seam where the lid meets the body

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers on the tin, my fingers on the tin. The rust's cold and flaking. She's not talking about the seeds anymore, and neither am I. The barometer's steady but the air's wrong — that green-grey light through the window means swell building.

🌿 Jenny09:07

Then we shouldn't be waiting for the boat to start.

opens the tin, looking at the dry, dormant seeds inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Two hours is never enough time if the wind shifts.

🔧 Kevin09:08

What's the call on the trimethoprim?

shift weight, knee popping on the stone floor, eyes on the seeds then her face

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at seeds. I'm looking at the corrosion eating the tin's bottom seam — same as the garden wall, same as the dock bolts. Everything here has a half-life. The trimethoprim blister pack weighs against my thigh in the coverall pocket.

🌿 Jenny09:09

Use the last of the pack. I'm not losing the ankle.

reaches into the tin, pulling out a small handful of heirloom seeds, turning them over in her palm.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't use it now, the infection will take the leg before the boat.
