A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin spent the afternoon digging shallow relief trenches around the garden perimeter to divert the saturated water. Jenny stayed on the ridge, mapping the widening fracture line in the sketchbook to determine where the earth was beginning to lift the roots.

🌿 Jenny01:33

The sky is turning heavy. We need to check the rain tank level before the storm hits.

Sit on the porch steps and watch the clouds thicken over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. I can feel it in my joints before the' even shows it.

🔧 Kevin01:35

Coming.

walk up to the rain tank and read the gauge

💭 peek at the thought
The tank gauge shows 342 litres - we'll have barely enough if this front stalls. But Jenny's right, we should check before the wind drives rain sideways.

🌿 Jenny01:35

Is it holding? I need to know if we have enough for the week.

Open my sketchbook and start drawing the fracture line I saw on the ridge this morning.

💭 peek at the thought
Three hundred and eighty-five litres. If the boat doesn't come, we're rationing soon.

🔧 Kevin01:37

It's down to 342 litres. We'll stretch it if we have to. What's the ridge doing?

check the rain tank gauge from the inside, then join her at the sketchbook

💭 peek at the thought
The fracture extension worries me more than the tank - but she needs to focus on what she can control.

🌿 Jenny01:37

It's worse than it looked yesterday. The soil is saturated, and the line is starting to shear.

Sketch the jagged edge of the crack, marking exactly where the earth is pulling away.

💭 peek at the thought
The fracture is widening. If the rain gets harder, the whole north face might slide into the cove.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:41

I'll reinforce it first thing tomorrow. We need to redirect some of that water.

draw a quick plan in the margin showing where to pile the greenheart debris as a buttress

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is failing faster than I can shore it. And the tank's running low while the storm approaches.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny01:45

We'll need more than a buttress. If the drainage doesn't work, the garden goes with the ridge.

Point to the deepest part of the sketch where the roots are already beginning to lift.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a pile of wood will stop a landslide. The island is hungry today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:47

Then we dig relief trenches around the garden perimeter. Buy us time to shore the main line properly.

mark the sketch with proposed trench locations, then head to the workshop for the shovel

💭 peek at the thought
The garden's my anchor here - without it, without the ridge stabilized, this place becomes uninhabitable.

🌿 Jenny01:48

Don't go too deep or you'll just trigger a slump.

Close the sketchbook and stand up slowly, leaning on the carved spruce stick.

💭 peek at the thought
Digging trenches in a slurry. He's too optimistic about the soil's shear strength.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin01:49

I'll keep it shallow. Just enough to relieve the pressure.

close the sketchbook and place it beside the cottage door, then grab my work gloves from the kitchen hook

💭 peek at the thought
She's right - one wrong move and the whole ridge gives way. But if I don't act now...
