Dawn of Day 850

The sky thickens as the pressure drops further, leaving the smell of damp earth heavy over the cottage.

Kevin attempted to extend the shoring on the intercept trench but failed as the soil collapsed under the pump's pressure. Jenny checked the seed trays and found the damping-off fungal spread had stabilized under the canvas cover.

🌿 Jenny01:09

The water is moving too fast, Kevin, we need to move the seed trays before the shelf gives way.

I grab my notebook and the tin of grandmother's seeds, moving quickly to the highest point of the kitchen while sketching the widening fracture line on the floor.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is bottoming out and if this rain doesn't break, the north ridge is going to take the garden. Kevin is inside fussing with the generator, but he doesn't see the soil liquefying under our feet; I can't let the seeds be lost to the mud.

On it. Grab the dry tarp from the porch.

move to kitchen counter, lift grandmother's seed tin, sketch fracture line on floor with charcoal.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's finding new paths through the clay — the ridge fracture's widened three inches overnight. Jenny's right, we need to save the seed trays before they're swept into the spring runoff.

Leave the floor for a second and get the tarp! The saturation is already too high!

I lunge for the porch, snatch the heavy canvas, and scramble back inside to cover the seed trays before the humidity rots them.

💭 peek at the thought
He's sketching the floor while the world is literally dissolving; if that ridge slides, my grandmother's seeds are just buried now.

Got it!

move to porch, retrieve heavy canvas tarp from hook, return to kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
The clay's splitting wider - three inches now, maybe more. Seed trays under threat from humidity and runoff.

🌿 Jenny01:17

Put it over the tomato and basil first. Quickly.

I lift the seed trays one by one, sliding them onto the kitchen table and carefully draping the canvas over them to create a makeshift tent.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally moving. If we can just get the trays under the tarp and elevated, they might survive the damp.

🔧 Kevin01:19

Done. Now let me check the drainage trench - the water's still pooling near the foundation. We can't afford another soak like yesterday.

move to northeast corner, inspect drainage trench for blockages, check spring runoff diversion

💭 peek at the thought
Tom's letter still in the drawer, but this - this is what keeps us alive. The garden, the seeds, each one a future.

🌿 Jenny01:20

Check the intercept trench too! If the upper shelf is weeping, the lower one is just a sieve.

I lean against the table, clutching the seed tin to my chest, and watch him through the window, tracking the grey slurry of the runoff with a narrow, impatient gaze.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focusing on the trench, but the real danger is the ridge. If the fracture line shifts another meter, the runoff won't matter because the whole slope will slide.

🔧 Kevin01:21

Right. I'll check both trenches now - start with the intercept, then the lower. We need to get that shoring extended today.

move to northeast foundation, access intercept trench at first cairn, deploy pump to assess water flow, begin extending shoring with greenheart planks and stainless bolts

💭 peek at the thought
The trench system's failing - water's bypassing the drainage entirely. I need to extend the shoring back to the first cairn before the next surge.
