Afternoon work divides
Kevin is at the cottage testing the rebuilt Yanmar pump and raising the supply boat on radio; Jenny is at the garden mapping north ridge fractures.
Kevin called the supply boat on shortwave but received only static and a fragment of mainland news. Jenny marked the new fracture on the north ridge and covered it with a weighted tarp to slow erosion before the rain.
You carry the dinghy down to the water, the rebuilt Yanmar bolted to the transom. The engine catches on the second pull. You let it warm at idle, watching the tell-tale stream — strong and steady. You advance the throttle to half, then three-quarters, feeling for the vibration that plagued the prop shaft. The hull planes clean. You key the radio again: Sorrel Island calling supply boat, over.
Sorrel Island calling supply boat, over.
hold the mic, wait for reply, eyes on the tell-tale and the horizon

Kevin — kill the Yanmar, tie off the dinghy, climb back to the cottage with the radio in hand

You hobble up the garden path to the north ridge, cane digging into wet clay. The rain sheets off your oilskin. At the first cairn, you kneel and unpack the notebook — the fracture line you traced yesterday has extended past the stability mark, a hairline crack now visible in the exposed clay face. You sketch the new length, measure the offset, and log the GPS.
Not today, hold on just today.
You drive a wooden stake into the edge of the new crack and tie a piece of bright orange twine to it to mark the displacement, then carefully record the measurements in the notebook before the ink blurs.

Stay put, just stay put.
You pull the heavy-duty way from your pack and stretch it over the fracture line, weighting the edges down with flat stones to prevent the wind from catching it.
