The approaching front

The air grows heavy as the scent of salt and damp earth rises. You and Jenny retreat inside the cottage as the first cool gust of wind whistles through the porch shutters.

Kevin moved the heavy seed tin E to the wood stove hearth to protect it from rising humidity, while Jenny attempted to sketch the north ridge fracture lines but was hindered by severe ankle pain and trembling hands. The barometer continued falling to 993 hPa, signaling an approaching front that threatens the ridge stability.

🌿 Jenny05:29

Close the door, Kevin. The wind is catching the salt in the radio housing.

Sit at the kitchen table, prop my ankle up on a chair, and open my notebook to a fresh page.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to wash out the north ridge before I can finish the transect.

🔧 Kevin05:29

Yeah.

pull the porch door shut and throw the bolt, then move to the radio shelf and unplug the coax from the back of the set

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling and she's right about the salt — it eats the contacts if the housing breathes. She's favouring the ankle again.

🌿 Jenny05:31

Don't touch the connections yet, the humidity will seize the pins.

Pick up my pencil and start sketching the fracture lines of the north ridge before the memory fades.

💭 peek at the thought
If the radio goes down, I'm just a woman on a rock with weeds.

🔧 Kevin05:31

Right. Let it breathe.

step back from the radio, hands on hips, watching her work the page

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the gear better than she lets on. Humidity on cold brass — pins swell, you force them and the threads strip. She's sketching the ridge while the memory's fresh. Smart.

🌿 Jenny05:33

Kevin, the barometer's dropping faster than you think. The north ridge won't wait for the supply boat.

Tap the page with my pencil, making a sharp mark where the new tension cracks intersect.

💭 peek at the thought
He means well, but he doesn't understand that some things need to die quietly.

🔧 Kevin05:34

How fast?

lean over the table to read the sketch upside down, finger tracing the pencil line where the cracks meet

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. 993 to whatever it is now in the time we've been standing here. The intercept trench held last rain but those new cracks at the intersection — that's the slab letting go in sections.

🌿 Jenny05:35

Fast enough to lose the heirloom garden if we don't move the seeds.

Wince as I shift my weight, the throbbing in my ankle pulsing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If it hits 980, the whole slope goes to the sea.

🔧 Kevin05:35

Tin E's on the counter. Trays by the window. Packets on the sill.

straighten, already moving toward the door — grab the heavy canvas roll from the shed corner and the timber battens leaning against the wall

💭 peek at the thought
The heirloom seeds. Tin E, the packets drying on the windowsill, the trays under the tarp. If the ridge goes, the garden wall goes, and the salt water takes everything we planted. She's thinking ahead while I'm standing here reading lines on paper. Ankle's flaring again — she's hiding it but the wince was real.

🌿 Jenny05:37

Get the seed tin near the wood stove. The humidity is going to kill the germination.

Reach for the rusted tin, my fingers trembling as I check the seal for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for me, but he's right.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:37

On it.

cross to the kitchen counter, lift the heavy rusted tin marked E from beside the coffee jar, carry it to the wood stove and set it on the hearth stone where the warmth drifts up — not too close, just enough

💭 peek at the thought
She's got Tin E in her hands — the rusted one, grandmother's, bottom seam corroded. She's checking the seal with fingers that shake. The tremor isn't just the ankle. She's scared for the seeds, for the garden, for what the ridge taking the wall means. Wood stove's dry heat. Only place on this island that guarantees it.
