The Approaching Storm

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust. A frantic scratching sound echoes from inside the pantry.

Kevin stripped and inspected the Yanmar's raw water impeller, finding the housing alignment true but the impeller blades worn thin. Jenny walked the north ridge with her cane, mapping fracture extensions in her notebook before rain forced her back, noting three new tension cracks past the previous stability line.

Pantry again. Sounds bigger than a mouse.

Walk to the pantry door, pull the crowbar from my belt loop, and set the snap trap on the shelf by the flour sack — fresh corned beef bait from the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Rat's back. Or a new one. Caught the last big female two days ago but the scratching never really stopped — just got quieter. Pantry's compromised.

🌿 Jenny06:31

Good. Get that trap set before it gets worse.

Set snap trap with corned beef bait in pantry, check water tank levels (385L), debride infected ankle with scalpel, apply fresh sea beet-mint poultice, apply antibiotic cream, wrap with clean gauze, sketch north ridge fractures in notebook

💭 peek at the thought
The pantry trap is set, but I need to map these fractures before they claim everything. Water's rising in the tank already from this rain.

Tank's at three-eighty-five. Enough for a week if we're careful. You need help with the debridement or you got it?

Lean the crowbar against the wall, pull the stool over, and sit to retie the dinghy bow line where it's chafing at the chock — hands working the splice while I watch her face.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving stiff. Ankle's slowing her more than she'll say. Trap's set — now the waiting.

🌿 Jenny06:33

I've got it. Just keep the light steady.

Open first aid kit, debride ankle, flinch at the pain, apply poultice and wrap.

💭 peek at the thought
I can do it. I just need him to stop looking at me like I'm made of glass.

🔧 Kevin06:34

Light's steady.

Hold the headlamp beam fixed on her ankle, elbow braced on my knee, not looking away when the scalpel moves — other hand ready with the gauze before she asks.

💭 peek at the thought
She won't ask. Won't make a sound either. Jaw tight, breath controlled — same as the ridge mapping yesterday. I know that silence.

🌿 Jenny06:35

Thanks. I need to finish this map before the rain starts for real.

way on the porch, wince as I shift my weight, sketch the new fracture lines in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is going to go. I can see it in the way the water is pooling up there.

🔧 Kevin06:37

Take the cane. Don't hobble up there on a bad leg and wet rock.

Walk inside, pull the driftwood cane from the corner by the door, and set it on the porch rail beside her notebook — then strip the Yanmar's raw water impeller cover to check the housing alignment before the vibration gets worse.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's close now. Can smell it in the wind shift. She'll push through the pain and finish the sketch — that's what she does. But the ankle's swollen worse than yesterday, and the fracture line's moving faster than we mapped.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:37

I'll take it.

grab the cane, lean on it as I stand, continue sketching the north ridge fractures in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, I hate that he's right. If I fall, the whole survey is over.
