Evening Recovery and Prep

The air remains thick and humid as the sun begins to dip. Jenny is elevated, her ankle wrapped freshly, while Kevin prepares a small fire for the evening's meal.

Kevin ascends the north ridge, his driftwood cane tapping rhythmically against the damp earth. Below him, Jenny remains at the cottage, her pencil scratching against the paper as she attempts to capture the sea-beet morphology. The air is heavy with humidity, the scent of salt and vegetation preceding the coming rain.

🔧 Kevin09:50

(quiet, to himself) Right then. Supper.

Build a small fire in the wood stove, set the kettle on to boil, and pull two tins of corned beef from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's finally sleeping proper. The fever broke sometime after the second dose. Ankle's still angry but the red line hasn't moved since the debridement. That's something.

🌿 Jenny09:51

Don't overcook the beef, Kevin.

Jenny opens her notebook and begins a detailed sketch of the sea-beet's salt location, her hand steady despite the exhaustion.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the waves, but at least the pressure is gone. I need to check the tank again before the light fails completely.

🔧 Kevin09:53

Wouldn't dream of it.

Slice the corned beef thick, lay it in the cast iron skillet with a spoonful of the rendered fat, and sear it quick — just long enough to crisp the edges. Slide two tin mugs onto the table alongside.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the strength back in her hands. That's more telling than the temperature.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:55

I'll check the ankle again after supper.

Jenny sets her sketchbook on the table and reaches for her antibiotics from the medical kit, popping a dose with her remaining water.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection line hasn't moved, thank god, but I can feel the heat of the poultice cooling as the evening air sets in.

🔧 Kevin09:55

I'll heat more water for the soak. Epsom salts ran out but the sea beet poultice is fresh.

Plate the seared corned beef, divide it between the two mugs with the hot fat spooned over, and set one in front of her. Take the other mug and the sketchbook to the porch table, eat standing, eyes on the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's taking them without argument. The doxycycline and metronidazole both — full course. That's not nothing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:57

Kevin, check the water test kit from the supply boat. I need to test the spring water quality before the batteries die.

Jenny unwraps the fresh poultice from her ankle and begins applying the new batch of sea beet and mint mixture, her movements careful despite the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
979 and falling. The poultice won't hold the infection at this rate.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin09:57

Strips are in the crate. Four left. I'll bring it.

Finish the corned beef in three bites, wipe the mug rim with a thumb, and walk to the generator shed. Retrieve the new water test kit from the supply crate, check the strip count, and carry it back to the porch table.

💭 peek at the thought
The kit's in the crate by the generator shed. Four strips left if nobody touched it. She's thinking ahead — spring water, garden irrigation, the tank. Smart.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:59

Be careful with the water, I don't want any false negatives.

Jenny dips a test strip into a glass of spring water, watching the color change with a narrowed eye.

💭 peek at the thought
Four strips. If the tank is contaminated, I'm in serious trouble before the boat arrives.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:59

Kit's sealed. Strips haven't seen air since the boat dropped it.

Lean against the porch post, mug in hand, watching her dip the strip. Glance at the barometer — still 979, still steady. The wind hasn't shifted.

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. False negatives on coliforms could kill us slower than the storm.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:01

Kevin, I need you to check the north ridge this morning. The tension cracks are spreading faster than I documented.

Jenny carefully rewraps her ankle with fresh gauze, securing the poultice in place before sitting back down to eat.

💭 peek at the thought
The strip shows safe levels, but the infection margins are creeping again despite the poultice.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin10:01

I'll go now. Before the tide turns.

Set the empty mug down, pull the driftwood cane from the corner, and head out the porch door toward the north ridge path.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking. She's telling. The ridge has been moving all season — clay sliding on blue clay, iron bands holding until they don't. She mapped it. She knows the math. My legs work. Hers don't right now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:03

Watch out for the loose shale near the spring.

Jenny watches him go, opens her notebook and begins to sketch the sea-beet morphology from memory, her hand trembling slightly from the throbbing in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He needs to see the slope. If the ridge goes, the garden goes with it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:04

(calling back over shoulder) Aye.

Follow the worn path up the north slope, cane tapping rhythmically. Pass the intercept trench — water still seeping at the clay line, greenheart shims holding.

💭 peek at the thought
She remembers the shale. Means she's walked it as much as I have. The tremor in her hand — she'd call it fatigue. I call it the body keeping score.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:05

Jenny — jenny leans back against the stone wall, the pencil scratching against the paper as she captures the jagged edge of a sea-beet leaf, her eyes fixed on the ridge where he disappeared.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for that slope. The ground is like a sponge waiting to give way.
