← Day 859

the old shrine · day 859 · evening

Evening approaches

The wind picks up speed as the sun dips lower, cooling the air slightly as they retreat to the cottage to prepare for the night.

Kevin secured the generator shed tarp against the rising wind and checked the dinghy mooring lines, finding them holding. Jenny examined the sea-beet plants at the shrine garden despite her ankle, noting salt gland density differences, then limped toward the cottage. The barometer continued falling to 980 hPa as heavy rain began.

Wind's backing west. We'll double the dinghy lines and check the generator shed door.

walk up the dock path toward the cottage, checking the dinghy mooring lines as I pass

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifted. Temperature dropping. Front's moving faster than the barometer suggested. Need to get the dinghy lines doubled before full dark.

Check the tarp on the shed first. It was flapping.

Shift weight own my good leg and hobble toward the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks more rope will stop a storm. 979 hPa doesn't care about his knots.

Shed first. You get inside, put the kettle on.

turn toward the generator shed, pulling the heavy canvas tarp tight and re-tying the corner lines to the cleats

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Shed tarp's been loose since the last squall. If it tears now, we lose the generator cover and the spare fuel. She's favouring the ankle hard — didn't want to say it back at the dock.

🌿 Jenny10:59

I'm checking the sea-beets first.

Reach down to touch the weathered stone of the shrine, wincing at the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The kettle is not the priority when the ridge is literally way away.

🔧 Kevin11:00

Your ankle. The shed. That order.

finish securing the last corner of the generator shed tarp, then follow the path toward the garden, keeping the cottage porch light in sight

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Always has been. Sea-beets can wait five minutes while the shed tarp holds the generator. But she's already moving toward the garden, not the cottage. Ankle's bad enough she's using the shrine stone for balance.

🌿 Jenny11:01

I know how my leg works.

Pull out my notebook and wipe the grit from the page of the sea-beet sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
He treats my body like a checklist. I'm not a project.

🔧 Kevin11:02

Cottage's closer. Tea's waiting.

fall in step behind her on the path, close enough to catch her if she goes down, far enough to let her pretend she doesn't need it

💭 peek at the thought
She does. Better than me. She's recorded more of this island in six months than I have in eleven. But pride doesn't set bone or stop infection. The garden's fifty metres. The cottage is thirty. She's choosing the garden.

🌿 Jenny11:03

I'll be in a minute.

Snap the notebook shut and stuff it into my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
Tea won't fix the pressure or the infection.
