Dawn of the Rising Tide

The rain has slowed to a persistent drizzle, but the air remains grey. The tide is sitting high against the harbor wall.

Kevin and Jenny walked to the garden to inspect the north ridge trench under the warm rain. They observed the water weeping through the garden wall base but confirmed the tank was still holding and the overflow was clear.

Jenny — stand up slowly, limp to the porch, and check the overflow on the water tank.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, and the humidity is making the paper in my own curl.

Want a hand back to the table?

step onto the porch behind her, eyes on the overflow channel, then to her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving stiff. The ankle's worse than she's letting on. Tank overflow's steady — good sign the foundation patch held, but the ground's saturated. Need to check the north ridge intercept trench before it blows out.

🌿 Jenny11:35

I'm fine. Just checking the tank.

lean my weight against the whitewashed stone for support and watch the water run into the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
I can manage the walk myself, but the salt air is getting into my bones today.

Tank's holding. Overflow's clean.

lean against the doorframe beside her, arms crossed, watching the water cut its channel in the mud

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The way she's favouring that leg, the set of her jaw. Tank's full — 400 litres, overflow running clean. That's one thing not to worry about. But the north ridge trench is taking all this water and the clay's already weeping. If the garden wall base goes, we lose the beds.

🌿 Jenny11:37

Good. At least one thing isn't leaking.

wipe a bead of rain from my forehead and look down at the sodden earth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for a fix, doesn't see the weight of the water in the air.

🔧 Kevin11:38

The north ridge trench is taking the brunt. Clay's weeping at the garden wall base. Need to check it before the next downpour.

push off the doorframe, grab the mattock leaning by the porch step, head toward the garden

💭 peek at the thought
That wasn't about the tank. She knows about the letter. The trust letter. She's waiting for me to say something. The rain's masking the sound but not the weight between us. I should've burned it. Should've told her the day it came. Now it's been weeks.

🌿 Jenny11:39

I'll come. I need to check the sea beet morphology anyway.

grab my sketchbook from the table, wincing as the weight shift hits my injured ankle, and follow him into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wall goes, the whole garden follows with it. I need to see the erosion myself.

🔧 Kevin11:40

Slow. Let me carry the book.

fall into step beside her, right side positioned to take weight if she needs it, mattock resting on shoulder

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Good. Means she's still here. The limp's bad — weight shift shouldn't hurt that much unless the infection's tracking deeper. Poultice needs changing. Antibiotics are eight days out if the boat comes on schedule. If. The trench comes first. Then the ankle. Then the letter.
