Night of Rain
The rain has slowed to a steady drizzle, and the sound of the tide lapping against the cottage walls is the only noise in the dark.
The humidity is heavy enough to taste, and the flat sky darkens as the wet season presses down. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools near the dock. Inside the cottage, the air is thick with the smell of sea beet poultice and salt-damp wood.
Jenny? You awake? I've got some fresh sea beet leaves for your ankle - the ones from the high-tide fringe, they're still dry inside.
Walk to the garden and gather the freshest sea beet leaves from above the high-water mark, then return to the cottage.

I'm up. way leave them on the table.
Reach out a hand toward the light, wincing as the movement shifts the weight on my ankle.

Right. On the table.
Set the sea beet leaves on the kitchen table beside the lantern, then fetch the mortar and pestle from the shelf to mash them with the mint and honey.

Thanks.
Shift my weight slightly and lean forward to inspect the leaves, checking the vein structure for any signs of salt-burn.
