The Calm Before the Storm
The air pressure drops further as the first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof. The tide is at its peak, threatening the lower dock planks.
The air is thick with humid heat, clinging to the skin as the grey sky remains motionless. The tide retreats slowly, exposing the slick rocks of the southern flats while Jenny sits on the porch, her ankle throbbing in time with the heavy atmosphere, the sea beet poultice feeling cool and damp against the swelling skin.
The water is getting too high.

I'm not. Just checking the joint.
remove crowbar, step back to the sound planks and check the mooring lines with the spare rope, testing each knot under tension as the tide pushes harder against the dock
