The Ridge in the Dusk

As the rain begins to taper into a heavy mist, Kevin and Jenny make the slow climb to the ridge to visit the stone circle before the light fails completely.

Kevin and Jenny met at the old shrine as the pressure continues to drop. The air is heavy with humidity, and Jenny's ankle remains swollen while they wait for the supply boat due in two days.

🌿 Jenny13:58

We should check the shrine before dark. Some of these stones are barely legible.

walk up to the shrine, leaning on the carved walking stick I whittled from driftwood.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is flaring with the barometric change again, and I can feel the stitches in my ankle tightening with each step. But these stones—those names carved into them—are older than any storm. My grandmother's seeds are safe for now.

Aye. The 'E' stone still clear?

walk up to the shrine

💭 peek at the thought
The mist clings to the ridge stones, softening the carved names further. She's right — another season and half these will be unreadable. My knees remember the climb.

🌿 Jenny13:59

For now. But the moss is moving in.

reach out and wipe a patch of moisture from the 'E' with the side of my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
It's still there, but the lichen is eating the edges just like it's eating the cottage. Everything here is trying to reclaim itself.

🔧 Kevin14:01

Keep coming back to finish what we started.

wipe moss from 'E' stone with sleeve

💭 peek at the thought
Moss thriving in this damp. The carving's deeper than I remember — my own work, years ago.

🌿 Jenny14:01

If the island lets us, maybe.

shift my weight to my good leg, wincing as the throb spikes through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
We haven't even started. We're just surviving the surface.

🔧 Kevin14:02

Supply boat's two days out. They'll have meds.

rest hand on her shoulder briefly

💭 peek at the thought
She hides it poorly now. The limp's worse than yesterday. Infection line's past the knee by morning if the antibiotics don't hold.

🌿 Jenny14:03

I hope they didn't miss the radio again.

look down at the weathered names, tracing the worn curve of a letter with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
Two days is an eternity when your leg feels hot and angry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:04

They got the ETA. Three days at high tide. Two-hour window.

step back, scan the stone circle for new damage

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't need false reassurance. The French trawler heard me. The supply boat's captain acknowledged. But the barometer's still falling and the channel's a bastard in a westerly blow.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:05

We'll have to be fast. I can't miss another delivery.

check the barometer again, watching the needle shiver own the low.

💭 peek at the thought
Two hours is barely enough to load the boat, let alone fix anything.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:06

You won't. I'll signal them myself if the radio fails.

pull the barometer from my pocket, tap the glass

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting doses in her head. I can see it. Four doxycycline left, fourteen metronidazole from the cache. The infection's bought time but not much.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:07

Signal them... or I'll signal that I'm done waiting.

slide the tin of seeds into my jacket pocket, close it slowly against the weight of grandmother's last hope.

💭 peek at the thought
The mercury's trembling—982 and falling fast.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin14:08

You're not done waiting.

press the tin deeper into my pocket, turn toward the path down

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's cold against my chest through the wool. She's handing me the thing she values most. Trust, or a final instruction.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:09

I'm just waiting for the wind to stop.

follow him down the ridge, my ankle throbbing with every heavy step into the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the rot moves through the wood.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:10

Wind's west. Boat comes from the east. We'll see her.

walk down to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
The wind won't stop. Not properly. Not while we're here. But the mist's lifting enough to see the cottage roof line.
