the keeper's cottage · day 862 · morning

Midday meal and storm watch

Rain hammers the cottage roof. The barometer reads 983 hPa. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with tin mugs of limpet broth and the last of the corned beef. The generator thrums outside. Jenny's ankle is elevated on a cushion. Kevin checks the Yanmar vibration log. The supply boat is due in two days at high tide.

Heavy western rain lashes the cottage, stalling outdoor work on the dock due to high humidity. Jenny monitors the falling barometer pressure while managing her ankle infection, and Kevin prepares for the coming storm and the upcoming supply boat.

The barometer is moving, Kevin. We need to secure the sisterer before the tide turns.

Reach out to touch the glass dial, then note the reading in the field notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If it hits 980, the north dock won't hold the surge, and I'll be losing the seedlings to the salt.

Low tide tomorrow's 0647. We'll be on the dock by six. Got one bolt left from the original supply — if the rot goes deeper than three planks I'll have to machine more from the stainless rod. Tonight I'll stage the gear and check the come-along's ratchet.

finish broth, set mug down, pull notebook from pocket, flip to dock repair page, write: 'Tomorrow 0600 - north dock stringer sistering. Greenheart plates (2) staged. 150mm stainless through-bolt x1. Come-along. Oak wedges.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The glass has dropped another millibar since I checked at dawn. Two days to high tide and the dock won't wait. The sistering needs doing at low water — gives us maybe ninety minutes of work window tomorrow before the surge comes back. Need the greenheart plates, the last 150mm through-bolt, and the come-along pre-staged tonight.

Don't forget the salt water for the ankle. The humidity is rising.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and walk to the porch to watch the rain gauge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking about the hardware, and I'm thinking about the seeds. The tin is already gone, but the seeds are still holding on.

Basin'll be ready when you come back in. Two handfuls of rock salt from the sack by the stove.

rise from table, collect both mugs, rinse in sink with precious fresh water, set to drain, pull rock salt sack from beside stove, measure two handfuls into enamel basin, set basin on stove to warm

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the weather in her bones same as the barometer. Ankle's been the metronome for this storm — swells when the pressure drops. Salt soak helps draw the heat. I'll warm a basin before we turn in.

🌿 Jenny13:35

I'll check the barometer once more before I soak.

Lean against the doorframe, watching the grey water blur the line of the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical with the tools, like the island is just a machine to be fixed. I'm just waiting for the rot to win.

Need a hand carrying the basin out? Or you want the door left cracked?

lift warm basin from stove, test temperature with wrist, carry to porch, set on floor beside cushion, pull up stool and sit facing her

💭 peek at the thought
She's stalling at the door. Doesn't want to sit with the ankle throbbing, doesn't want to admit the garden's drowning out there. The tomatoes are bent double under the tarp. Lettuce cells are rotting at the crown. She knows it. I know it. Neither of us says it.
