Night before the storm

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dust as the wind picks up, forcing a retreat back to the cottage.

Kevin checked the dinghy's seacocks and storm lines at the dock, finding the raw-water seacock stiff but seating fully and the exhaust discharge clear. Jenny opened the rusted grandmother's seed tin at the cottage, salvaging viable heirloom packets and moving them to the warm stove shelf to dry.

The barometer's falling - we need to secure the seed tin on the stove and check the dinghy's seacocks twice. The supply boat won't come on schedule.

Open the rusted grandmother's seed tin and transfer the viable seeds to a dry container, then move it to the wood stove shelf where it can stay warm and dry.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure's dropping fast - 984 now, and that southwest swell building means I need to secure everything before it turns horizontal. But my ankle's throbbing and the seeds are still in the tin, waiting for soil that might not hold them.

Aye. I'll get the dinghy.

Walk back to the cottage, pull on oilskins, and head down to the dock to check the dinghy's seacocks and storm lines.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the barometer. The needle's been sliding all afternoon. The supply boat's two days out at best, and that's if this low doesn't stall them. The tin on the stove is one less thing to lose.

🌿 Jenny14:13

(calling as he heads back toward the kitchen) The seeds are in the tin - move them to the stove shelf where the warmth can reach them. And Kevin... if the wind backs west below 980, secure everything above deck before the rain hits horizontal. We won't get a second chance.

Open the rusted grandmother's seed tin and carefully transfer each viable packet to a clean oilskin pouch, then place them beside the wood stove where the heat will keep them dry and their oils activated for germination.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure's dropping faster than I thought - 984 hPa and falling. Southwest swell building means we won't get the supply boat on schedule. My ankle's throbbing from the debridement, but I can't let that stop me from protecting what matters. Those seeds need warmth and dryness, not just for viability but for hope itself.

Below 980 and backing west, everything comes down. I know the rule.

Pull the oilskin jacket on, grab the wrench and torch from the porch hook, and jog down the slick path to the dock where the dinghy rides the rising chop.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving the seeds. Good. The oilskin pouch will breathe better than that rusted tin anyway. Her voice carries different now — steadier than her ankle should allow.

🌿 Jenny14:15

(shouting over the rising wind) Check the seacocks twice, Kevin! If the water gets into the dinghy, we're stuck here for the worst of the storm!

Limp back inside the kitchen, clutching the seed tin to my chest, and set it on the warmest part of the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is plummeting—984 hPa and still falling. If that boat doesn't make it, I'm in serious trouble. My ankle is screaming with every weight I shift, but I have to keep moving. Grandmother's seeds are the only thing I have left that hasn't been touched by this rot.

🔧 Kevin14:16

Checked and checked. If they leak, I'll know before we need her.

Reach the dinghy, crouch under the gunwale, and work the raw-water seacock handle back and forth — feel for grit, confirm full seat, then do the same for the exhaust discharge. Shine the torch up the through-hulls to check for weep.

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't need to tell me twice. The seacocks are the only thing between the dinghy and the bottom. Wind's already gusting past twenty — I can feel it in the rigging.
