A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain has intensified into a heavy downpour, drumming the cottage roof and saturating the air. The barometer continues its rapid drop to 986 hPa, signaling a significant storm front approaching. Inside, the air is thick with humidity, making the healing of Jenny's ankle sluggish and the drying of seeds nearly impossible.

🌿 Jenny15:59

Kevin, the poultice isn't working - I need you to heat some water, and could you grab my antibiotics from the medical kit?

Apply fresh sea beet and mint poultice to swollen ankle, then move to kitchen stove to boil water for irrigation.

💭 peek at the thought
The poultice isn't sticking anymore - the salt burn is spreading up my ankle like ink in water. I need to check if the antibiotics are still good, and I need to plant those seeds before this island kills everything I love.

On it.

grab the medical kit from the shelf, pull out the doxycycline blister pack (two doses left) and metronidazole (four doses), set them on the kitchen table, then fill the kettle from the tank and set it on the wood stove to boil

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's worse. The red line was mid-calf this morning — if it's tracking up again, the antibiotics aren't holding. Need hot water for irrigation, fresh poultice, and the rest of the doxycycline. She's moving to the stove herself; that's either stubbornness or she doesn't want me hovering. Either way, I'll get the kit and the water going.

🌿 Jenny16:01

Thank you. I need to start taking these now - the infection's spreading faster than I thought.

Take one doxycycline tablet with water from the tank, then check the barometer again.

💭 peek at the thought
The antibiotics are still good - two doses of doxycycline, four of metronidazole. That's barely enough to finish the course, but it's something. The kettle is starting to heat, and I can smell the sea beet poultice getting worse, not better.

Barometer?

glance at the barometer on the shelf while the kettle heats, read the needle

💭 peek at the thought
Two doxycycline left after this. Four metronidazole. That's not a full course for either. If the infection's tracking past mid-calf, she needs IV antibiotics and a boat off this rock. The supply boat's overdue. Radio's been static. I'll give her the doses we have and start thinking about the ditch bag — medevac forms, letter to Tom, notebook, spare impeller, seed tin E. But not out loud. Not yet.

🌿 Jenny16:03

It's dropping rapidly. We need to get the dinghy secured and the tarp down before the wind picks up.

Note the pressure reading in the log, then walk to the porch to watch the west clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping fast—986 hPa and still falling. The storm is coming earlier than the forecast predicted, and the air is already thick enough to choke on.

Dinghy first. Then shutters, tarp, generator. You take the porch lines — I'll get the mooring.

pull on oilskin and boots, grab the heavy weather line and spare warp from the porch hook, head down to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Dropping rapidly. She saw the same needle I did. Below 980 with wind backing west — we secure everything above deck before the rain hits horizontal. Dinghy first: double the stern spring, bow line slack for swell, storm anchor off the bow with fifty metres of warp to the mooring ring. Then the cottage tarp — batten the west ridge and chimney flashing. Garden shade cloth anchors shredded by the crab; need re-staking. Generator shed lashings. Porch shutters. The list is long and the light's going. She's on the porch watching clouds. I'll start with the dinghy while the tide's still low enough to work the lines.
