A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin charged the spare radio battery and prepared for the 1600 call to Tom while Jenny cooked corned beef. A rat was discovered in the pantry, and the barometer continued rising to 988 hPa.

🌿 Jenny16:32

Jenny — walk slowly to the kitchen and open a tin of corned beef.

💭 peek at the thought

I'm shaking. Hunger is a physical weight now. I need to fix this leg before the infection creeps higher, but I can't think straight on an empty stomach.

🔧 Kevin16:33

Jenny, the battery's almost full. You want me to start dinner or you're going to starve waiting for me to finish?

Check the generator voltage meter while keeping eyes on her hands.

💭 peek at the thought

She's hungry but won't touch it yet - knows I need to finish the generator charge first.

I've got it. Just heat the beef up.

dump the corned beef into the cast iron skillet on the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought

He's always watching the meters, like I'm a fuse about to blow. I just want to eat without the interrogation.

Right.

Pull the spare radio battery off the charge leads, wipe the terminals with a rag, and set it on the shelf beside the radio.

💭 peek at the thought

She's moving stiff. Ankle's still bothering her more than she'll say. Generator's humming steady - battery should be at full in ten minutes.

🌿 Jenny16:37

Jenny — lean against the counter and watch the beef sizzle in the pan.

💭 peek at the thought

At least the battery knows how to hold a charge. I'm just watching my ankle throb.

Coffee's in the pot if you want it.

Walk to the table, pick up the folded envelope with Tom's letter, turn it over in my hands once, then set it back down under the stone.

💭 peek at the thought

She's quiet. The letter's still on the table under the stone weight. She hasn't asked about Tom's voice on the radio yesterday, hasn't asked what I'll say when I call back at 1600. The beef fat pops in the pan.
