The Weight of the Rain

The rain shows no slack as the high tide laps against the lower stones of the cottage foundation.

The air is heavy and humid, the thickening clouds pressing down with the promise of a coming storm. Inside the cottage, the water continues to rise, seeping through the floorboards despite the sandbags and the tarp. Kevin works the manual pump, his muscles strained against the resistance, while Jenny leans heavily against the doorframe, her ankle throbbing in time with the rising pressure of the water.

🌿 Jenny03:17

The tide is in the porch again, we need to move the sandbags to the kitchen.

Limp back to the cottage and grab the heavy canvas tarp to block the door.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is rising too fast for the sill plate; if the epoxy seeps now, the whole structure will tilt.

🔧 Kevin03:18

Right. I'll shift the bags, you get the tarp down.

walk to the porch, grab two sandbags, carry them to the kitchen doorway, stack them tight against the base of the door frame, then check the copper spillway hose exit at the east foundation for blockage

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing higher than the last spring series. Porch threshold's breached — water's tracking under the door frame into the kitchen. Sandbags won't hold against hydrostatic pressure at this level; need the tarp weighted and the overflow trench checked.

🌿 Jenny03:19

Check the spillway, it's probably choked with silt again.

Drape the heavy canvas over the door and weight the bottom edge with the remaining stones.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too slow. The water is already seeping under the threshold of the kitchen.

🔧 Kevin03:20

On it.

walk around to the east foundation, pull the copper spillway hose free, shake out the silt, probe the intake with the auger bit, then flush it with a bucket of seawater to verify flow

💭 peek at the thought
Spillway's the only thing keeping the foundation from turning to soup. If it's choked, the intercept trench backs up and we lose the north wall. Need to clear it now while the tide's still pushing.

🌿 Jenny03:21

Is it clear? I can see water pooling on the floor already.

Squat down by the kitchen door, checking the seal of the tarp while my ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tank overflows inside, we'll lose the floorboards before the boat even gets here.

🔧 Kevin03:22

Spillway's clear. Water's coming up through the floor — not the door. Get the pump from the shed, I'll rig the discharge over the sill.

walk to the workshop shed, grab the manual pump and discharge hose, carry them to the kitchen, set the pump in the lowest corner by the stove, run the hose out through the porch door gap over the tarp

💭 peek at the thought
Spillway's running clean now — good fall, no backup. But the kitchen floor's already damp; water's coming up through the flagstones, not just the door. Hydrostatic pressure under the slab. Tarp at the door helps but won't stop the rise. Need to get the manual pump going in the kitchen corner before it reaches the radio shelf.

🌿 Jenny03:23

I'll get the manual pump. Don't drop the hose.

Hobble toward the shed, clutching my ankle to avoid putting weight on the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Through the floor? The island is saturated; the foundation is turning into a sponge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:24

Wait — I'll meet you.

walk fast to the shed door, meet Jenny halfway, take the manual pump from her, carry it back to the kitchen, set it in the corner by the stove, connect the discharge hose and run it out through the porch door gap over the tarp

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than she'll admit. Ankle's worse than she's saying. Pump's heavy for one leg. Should've gone myself — but she's already halfway there. I'll meet her at the shed door and take the weight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:25

Just make sure the hose doesn't kink. If it backs up, we're just stirring the mud.

Lean against the shed doorframe for a moment, closing my eyes to breathe through the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but he's just in the way of my rhythm. My ankle is pulsing in time with the rain.

🔧 Kevin03:27

Hose is clear. Pump's pulling. You sit. I'll watch the level.

work the manual pump handle steady, one hand on the discharge to watch the flow, other hand free to catch her if she lists

💭 peek at the thought
Hose runs clean — no kinks, good fall over the sill. Pump's priming. Water's moving. But she's white at the lips. The infection's not done with her. Antibiotics are in the kit but the metronidazole's low. Need to check doses after this settles.
