The Storm Deepens

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the wind picks up from the west. The water tank is full, but the supply boat is a day away.

The steady rain continues to drum against the cottage roof, keeping the air heavy with humidity. The water tank has finally reached its 400-litre capacity, with the overflow pipe beginning to trickle rhythmically into the mud outside. Jenny sits at the table, her ankle throbbing despite the poultice, while watching the steam rise from the drying mint. Kevin checks the radio one last time, ensuring the supply boat's arrival tomorrow is confirmed for high tide despite the swell.

🌿 Jenny07:49

The wind is shifting. Kevin, we need to check the ties on the generator before it turns horizontal.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping. If it hits below 980, the dock is going to take a beating.

Generator first. Then the dock lines at low tide — west wind stacks swell against the pilings.

Walk to the porch door, pull on oilskin jacket, and head out toward the generator shed.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. West wind means the generator shed takes the full fetch off the channel. If the lashings let go, the exhaust stack punches through the roof and we lose power. Ankle's bad but she's moving anyway.

🌿 Jenny07:51

I'll stay on the radio and debride this. Watch out for the swell.

Limp to the kitchen, grabbing the first aid kit and the bottle of antiseptic.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the lines. If those pilings give, the whole dock goes.

🔧 Kevin07:51

Shout if the supply boat raises anyone.

Cross the slick grass to the generator shed, testing the ratchet straps on the frame and the exhaust stack bracing.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll do it proper. She always does. Radio's charged, aerial's holding. I've got the shed.

🌿 Jenny07:53

Kevin, the generator's frame is shifting. Two more straps and we need to check the fuel line connections.

Grimace and apply pressure to my ankle as I head toward the generator shed, my hand reaching for the toolbox.

💭 peek at the thought
The straps are holding but I can feel the generator vibrating loose in its mounts.

🔧 Kevin07:53

Got stakes by the woodpile. Turnbuckle in the workshop. Be right back.

Jog back toward the cottage workshop, grabbing two 600mm oak stakes and the 12mm turnbuckle from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Frame's walking on the skids. Ground's saturated — the deadmen are pulling. Need longer stakes driven deeper, and a turnbuckle on the forward strap. Fuel line's copper, work-hardened; vibration'll crack it at the flare.

🌿 Jenny07:55

way. The humidity is making the wood swell and the ground is soft.

way on the kitchen chair and open the first aid kit to prepare the antiseptic for my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get those stakes down soon, the vibration will shear the bolts right out.

🔧 Kevin07:55

Kevin — return to the shed, drive stakes at 45 degrees with collar stones, cinch the turnbuckle on the forward strap, then inspect the copper fuel line at the filter housing and injector pump.

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking to herself. Or the ankle. Ground's soup — stakes need a collar stone or they'll just lever out. Should've driven them before the rain. No help for it now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:57

The barometer is falling, Kevin. We need to secure the dock lines before the tide turns.

soak a gauze in the antiseptic and prepare to treat the swelling on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast, but the rain is picking up. If that pressure drops any more, we're in trouble.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:57

Generator's fast. Heading to the dock.

Move fast down the path to the dock, hauling the heavy weather line and the spare 150mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut from the east shutter stash.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer falling, west wind, tide turning — dock takes it all at once. Generator's holding now. Need to be on the pilings before the water covers the mooring rings.
