The Calm Before the Arrival

The rain begins to settle into a drizzle as the sun sets. The cottage is warm from the wood stove, and the couple prepares the gear for tomorrow's boat arrival.

Kevin and Jenny shared a quiet evening at the cottage, checking the emergency dry bag and discussing the supply boat's arrival. Kevin attempted a radio check on Tom's frequency but received only a news broadcast and static. They placed the rusted seed tin E on the table, its wax seal intact, and shared a simple meal of limpet broth and coffee.

Boat's due high tide. Gear staged?

Check the dry bag by the loft ladder — medevac forms, letter to Tom, notebook, spare impeller, seed tin E — then walk to the porch and scan the horizon for any sign of lights on the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's still in my pocket. Heavy with the letter, the wax seal, the pebble from the tide line. Tomorrow the boat comes. Tomorrow I'll put it on her pillow. No words. She'll read it or she won't. The waiting's done.

It's by the door. I checked the seals twice.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, reaching for her sketchbook to mindlessly shade the swollen skin of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't show up, I'm out of clean gauze and this own is going to rot to the bone.

Good. Radio check at 1800. Tom's frequency.

Walk to the kitchen shelf, pick up the shortwave handset, and dial to 2182 kHz — the calling frequency — waiting for the squelch to open.

💭 peek at the thought
She checked the seals. She always checks the seals. Ankle's still bad — she's shading it like it's a sketch, not her own leg. I should've made her stay off it today. Should've done the dock piling alone.

🌿 Jenny08:01

Don't hold your breath. The atmospheric skip is probably garbage in this drizzle.

Lean back against the kitchen counter, watching the radio's signal meter dance with white noise.

💭 peek at the thought
Just static and ghosts. I can't bear to hear Tom's voice right now, not while I'm smelling like infection and old broth.

Habit.

Set the handset back in its cradle, then pull the tin marked E from my pocket and set it on the table between us — heavy, rusted, wax seal intact.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Drizzle kills skip. But habit's habit. Eighteen years at sea, you call on the hour. You listen. You log. Even when you know it's noise.

🌿 Jenny08:03

It's dry. For now.

Trace a thumb over the pitted metal of the lid, feeling the grit of salt rust under my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the tin like it's a holy relic. It's just seeds and hope.

🔧 Kevin08:04

Put it on her pillow tomorrow. After the boat.

Push the tin across the table toward her — slow, deliberate — and turn to fetch two tin mugs from the shelf, setting them by the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
She feels the rust like Braille. Knows every pit. She hasn't opened it. Hasn't asked. The letter's been in that tin since the supply boat dropped it — three weeks, maybe four. She's waited. I've waited. The tin's just metal. What's inside isn't.

🌿 Jenny08:05

Only if we get the supplies I need.

Pull the tin closer to me, the weight of it heavy against my palm, and watch the water boil on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, those seeds will just rot in the tin like this own.
