Night watch and morning prep
It is fully dark. The lantern burns low on the porch table. Kevin sits with the shortwave handset, listening to static. Jenny sleeps fitfully on the cot, ankle elevated on a folded blanket. The tide is low. The supply boat is three days out.
The air is heavy with the thickening cloud cover as the dry season heat lingers. Kevin attempts to prep the coax run but the high humidity makes the materials stiff and difficult to handle, while Jenny tries to manage her ankle pain while preparing for the coming boat.
Jenny — reach out to touch the cold metal of the seed tin on the table.

I'm awake. Be careful.
Sit up slowly, wincing as the throbbing in my ankle shifts.
