The Heavy Air
Jenny sits on the porch chair with her ankle propped on a crate, watching the still air. Kevin kneels on the floor, sorting through coils of old coax while the grey humidity hangs over the island.
Kevin attempted to strip the coax cable for the radio mast but the high humidity made the insulation stiff and stubborn. Jenny checked the heirloom seedling trays and noted early signs of damping-off on the lettuce cells. The air remains heavy and still at dawn.
Morning. Ankle feeling any different?
pick up the coil of new RG-8 coax from the porch floor and carry it to the base of the mast, laying it out straight to check for kinks before the climb

It's throbbing. The humidity is too high.
Reach for the notebook on the side table and sketch the structure of a sea beet leaf, focusing on the way the salt has curled the edges.

Red line still receding?
uncoil the RG-8 fully along the porch boards, running a hand down its length to feel for nicks in the jacket before I start feeding it up the mast

Not really. It's the same.
Close the notebook and rub the back of my eyes, wincing as the movement shifts the bandage.

I'll swap the poultice after I get the coax seated. Fresh sea beet and mint.
grab the PL-259 connector and crimp tool from the radio shelf, then walk to the mast base with the coax end, stripping back the jacket carefully with the knife

(quietly) I'll check the seedling trays while you work.
Rise slowly from the chair and shuffle toward the window where the seedlings sit, favoring the left leg.
