The Humidity Stalls

Kevin sits on the steps checking the barometer glass while the overcast clouds hang low over the ridge. Jenny sits beside him, wrapping a fresh bandage around her ankle while the damp air makes the wood feel heavy.

Kevin walked the handline and grapple down to the south beach at high tide, but the water was too deep and choppy to reach the salt-crusted crate. Jenny stayed at the cottage, debrided her ankle wound with the scalpel, and sorted the remaining sea beet seeds into labeled envelopes while the kettle steamed.

🌿 Jenny11:57

It's going to break before tomorrow.

Tighten the knot on the ankle wrap and

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If it rains before the boat comes, the seeds in the tin will just rot.

Barometer says different. But your knee says you're right.

reach over and adjust the bandage tension where it's bunching at her heel, then stand and walk to the porch rail to scan the south beach

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's steady at 998, but the air feels thick and the clouds are piling up on the ridge. She's reading the weather in her bones, not the glass. Her ankle wrap looks clean, but the red line's tracking past the calf now — I can see it where the gauze gaps. She won't let me touch it.

🌿 Jenny11:59

The glass doesn't feel the humidity.

Reach for the tin of seeds and run a thumb over the rusted lid.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the glass while I feel the salt in the air.

🔧 Kevin12:00

No. It doesn't.

turn back from the rail, pick up the kettle from the stove, and pour two mugs of the hot water sitting there

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The glass reads pressure, not the wet weight in the air that makes epoxy stay tacky and wood swell. Tin E on the stove shelf, lid off, seeds warming. She's thinking about planting, not the storm.

🌿 Jenny12:01

Let's wait for the boat.

Take the mug and wrap both hands around the ceramic for warmth.

💭 peek at the thought
If I plant them now, the rot will just take them before they sprout.

🔧 Kevin12:02

Boat comes when it comes. Crate won't wait six days.

sit on the step beside her, mug between knees, and watch the tide line on the beach

💭 peek at the thought
The boat's due in six days if the barometer holds. Six days of this humidity, her ankle getting worse, the crate pounding against the south beach rocks. She wants to wait because leaving means admitting the garden's unfinished, the shrine message unsent, the letter to Tom still in the dry bag. She's not talking about the supply boat.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:03

The soil isn't ready for them yet anyway.

Look out at the half-weeded garden and sigh.

💭 peek at the thought
The crate is just wood and salt; the seeds are what matter.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:04

Soil'll be ready when it's ready. Crate's got new rope in it. Half-inch three-strand. Dry.

take a sip of the hot water, set the mug on the step, and stand up

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the soil — pH logs show the untreated beds still sitting at 5.5, lime beds barely holding 6.8. The tomato seedlings are showing salt stress on the leaves, basil chewed down to nubs. She knows every number. She also knows the crate has rope, maybe tools, maybe the heat gun we needed for the coax seal. The garden's an excuse. We both know it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:05

Everything here is damp, Kevin.

Trace the edge of the seed tin with a shaky fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about the rope while I'm thinking about the rot in the marrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:06

Not the rope. Came in a sealed crate. Dry inside.

walk down the porch steps toward the beach, handline coiled over my shoulder, grapple hooked to my belt

💭 peek at the thought
Her finger's trembling. Not from cold. The infection's past her knee now, I saw it when she re-wrapped — hot, angry red tracking upward under the gauze. She's not saying it. I'm not saying it. The crate, the garden, the boat — all of it's noise. She needs the antibiotics finished, the leg elevated, the fever broken. I need to get the crate before the tide takes it back out. Neither of us is doing either thing right now.
