← Day 878

Apart — Kevin at the south beach, Jenny at the garden

The Rising Tide and Heavy Air

Kevin is at the south beach as the tide returns, while Jenny is at the garden wall.

Kevin spends the midday hours at the south beach assessing the shoreline stability as the air pressure continues to drop. Jenny works in the garden, tending to the heirloom seedlings while the thickening clouds make the air heavy.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the south beach

The water is deepening, obscuring the crate once more under silt and sand.

Kevin — walk back toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
The sea doesn't negotiate. Crate's gone again — buried under another tide cycle of silt. My back's cold from the wind off the water and I've got nothing to show for the walk down here but wet boots and a crowbar I didn't use.

🔧 Kevin12:22

Kevin — walk up the wooded path toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Boots heavy with wet sand. The path up from the beach cuts through the woods — spruce needles slick underfoot. Sky's the colour of bruised iron. Six days until the supply boat, if it comes. Jenny's ankle. The crate. The garden wall. The list doesn't shorten.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

The wind is gusting now, threatening to tear the half-secured stakes.

🌿 Jenny12:17

Stay down, you damn thing.

Lean my body weight against the canvas and hammer a stake deeper into the primary earth.

💭 peek at the thought
If those tarps rip, the whole patch is ruined by the salt spray. I need his hands for this.

🌿 Jenny12:21

Jenny — wipe the sweat and grit from my eyes and look toward the south path.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning the color of a fresh bruise. If Kevin doesn't come back soon, the seeds are gone.
