The Afternoon Slump

The rain shows no sign of slowing as the barometer continues to drop. You both retreat inside to wait out the worst of gusts.

The generator hums with a steady rhythm now, the marine-grade line holding firm under the double clamps. Outside, the rain hammers against the cottage roof, a relentless drumming that masks the sound of the wind lashing through the shutter gaps.

Generator's coughing. Going to pull the filter bowl before it dies on us. You need anything while I'm up?

Walk to the workshop shed, pull the generator fuel filter bowl, drain the water and silt, reinstall and prime.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling. 996 steady was the last I looked — that was an hour ago. This system's not done with us. Jenny's ankle won't take the damp cold, and the generator's running rough with all this moisture in the fuel. Need to check the filter bowl again before it chokes completely.

Check the fuel line while you're at it. It looks brittle.

Sit at the kitchen table, pull out the notebook, begin sketching the morphology of the rain patterns on the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator fails, the radio stays dead and I'm truly alone in the dark with these seeds.

Got it. If the line's gone, we're on batts for the radio. Five days' charge if I'm careful.

Inspect the generator fuel line at the clamp and along the run; if brittle or cracked, replace with the marine-grade line from the crate stores.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The line's been weeping at the clamp for weeks. Should've swapped it when the crate came in. Now it's either hold with tape or shut the genny down and run the radio off batteries until the supply boat — five days if she shows.

way make sure it doesn't leak. We can't afford the battery going down now.

Trace the path of a single raindrop on the glass with a pencil tip.

💭 peek at the thought
Five days is a long time to sit in the dark with an infection in my leg.

🔧 Kevin13:20

Clamp's stripped. I'll double it with a worm-drive from the spares. Won't leak.

Replace the fuel line with the marine-grade line from the crate, secure with a new worm-drive clamp (and a second as backup), then prime and restart the generator.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Radio's the only thread to the world. If the genny dies and the batteries follow, we're blind until the boat — if the boat comes. Line's marine grade from the crate. Should hold. But the clamp's stripped, been stripped since the last filter change. Need a proper Jubilee or double worm-drive. Got spares in the workshop.

🌿 Jenny13:21

Just keep it tight. The salt is getting in the metal.

Lean back in the chair, watching the stove flicker, and listen to the rain hammer the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the clamp, but the humidity is still eating everything else.

🔧 Kevin13:22

Marine line's rated for salt. Clamps are 316. It'll hold.

Finish the fuel line swap, double-clamp both ends, prime the bulb until firm, start the generator and verify smooth running at load.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt gets in everything. The clamp threads, the line's inner braid, the carburetor diaphragm I swapped last month. She knows. She's watched me chase corrosion through every system on this island. The genny's the heart now — radio, water pump, light. It fails, we're back to oil lamps and hand pumps. Not impossible. Just slower. And slower means the garden doesn't get watered, the anchor doesn't get checked, the radio goes silent.

🌿 Jenny13:23

fine. Keep an eye on the pressure.

Open the tin of seeds and trace the edge of the sea beet packet with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
At least one thing is holding, even if the air feels like a wet shroud.
