The Deepening Storm

The rain intensifies, turning the afternoon into a grey twilight. The air inside the cottage grows heavy with the smell of damp wood and salt.

The air in the cottage is a physical weight, the 31°C heat trapping the scent of damp stone. Jenny sits on the cot, her ankle throbbing beneath the fresh wrap, as she watches the dark bloom spread across the ceiling. Kevin prepares the copper sheeting, his movements slow in the humidity, while the radio hums with the rising tide through the floorboards.

🔧 Kevin13:24

Radio check in twenty minutes. If the supply boat's still on for three days out, I'll raise them on 2182 at high tide.

Set the tin mug of broth on the table beside Jenny, then climb the step-ladder with a rag and the roofing tar to patch the ceiling leak before it reaches the radio shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The leak at the ceiling joist is spreading. Can see the dark stain widening across the whitewash. Generator's still holding steady but if this keeps up the battery bank will take on water.

🌿 Jenny13:25

Don't let the tar get on the antenna. The wiring is already finicky with the moisture.

Jenny reaches for the mug of broth, the warmth seeping into her palms, and begins to sketch the leak pattern on the ceiling in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, we'll be out of flour before those seeds ever stand a chance in this rot.

🔧 Kevin13:27

Got it. I'll use the copper flashing from the galley roof instead - that'll ground the tar away from the feed line." [pause] "How's the pain?

Wipe my hands clean and hand her the sketch pad back, then fetch the copper sheeting from the storage shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the antenna - the coax feed line runs right up through the attic space where the leak is. One wrong move and I'll be blind when the boat arrives. Her hands shake slightly as she sketches, but she's working quick.

🌿 Jenny13:33

It's fine. Just the heat making everything feel sluggish.

Jenny pulls her leg up slightly, wincing silently as the movement shifts, and takes a slow sip of the broth.

💭 peek at the thought
It's throbbing like a heartbeat that isn't mine, heavy and insistent.

🔧 Kevin13:33

Take the metronidazole with the next dose. Full course." [pause] "I'll have the copper on the leak in ten minutes. You keep sketching - the pattern'll tell us where the water's tracking from outside.

Cross to the storage shelf, pull down the rolled copper sheeting from the galley roof, and unroll it on the workbench to measure the patch size.

💭 peek at the thought
She's lying about the pain. The heat's making it worse, not better - swelling increases with humidity, and that red line tracking up her calf hasn't retreated. Antibiotics should've shown more effect by now. She's protecting me from the truth same way I protected her from the storm watches.

🌿 Jenny13:35

I know. The water is coming through the seam on the north, not just the roof.

Jenny presses the pencil hard to the paper, marking the exact Radius of the water_\ on the whitewashed stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about doses like he can control the island, but the rot is already in the wood.

🔧 Kevin13:35

Then the ceiling patch is wasted time. I'll hit the chimney shoulder on the north ridge with the lead flashing and bitumen. You mark the inside spread so I know how far it's tracked when I open the wall.

Roll the copper back up, stow it. Grab the lead flashing roll, bitumen tub, and hammer from the workshop. Pull on the oilskin.

💭 peek at the thought
North seam. That's the foundation flashing, not the roof. Water's running down the wall cavity from the ridge line and finding the old mortar joint where the chimney meets the stone. Copper on the ceiling won't stop it - just redirects the rot. Need to get outside in this rain and flash the chimney shoulder proper.

🌿 Jenny13:36

Watch the flashing where the stone meets the slate. It's been pulling in the wind.

Jenny leans forward, tracing the dampness on the ceiling with a shaky finger before sketching the bloom of the mold.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's the chimney, the whole north wall is a sponge by next month.

🔧 Kevin13:36

I'll bed it in fresh bitumen and pin it with copper nails this time. Not relying on the old mortar." [pause] "Stay put. Keep the leg up. Broth's got corned beef fat in it - salt'll help the swelling.

Shoulder the workshop door open, step out onto the porch into the driving rain, and start up the ladder to the north ridge with the lead flashing tucked under one arm and the hammer in my belt.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the same thing I have - the wind's been working that flashing loose for weeks. Every gale pulls it another millimetre. The slate's sound but the lead's fatigued at the bend. If I don't seat it proper this time, the next blow tears it clean off and the chimney stack becomes a funnel. Her finger's trembling more than the cold explains.

🌿 Jenny13:39

Jenny — jenny watches him disappear into the grey rain, then slowly turns her gaze to the seed tin on the hearth, her fingers tracing the rusted lid.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt doesn't fix an infection, Kevin; it just preserves the decay.
