Storm Morning at the Cottage
Kevin and Jenny wake in the cottage to rain hammering the tin roof and wind driving sideways off the water. The barometer on the wall reads 984 hPa, the needle still dropping. Through the window the dock planks vanish under white-capped chop, the tide already halfway up the pilings.
Kevin checked the shortwave radio but found only static as the housing crack threatened its integrity. Jenny monitored the heirloom seeds and watched the barometer drop sharply as the clouds closed in, signaling an approaching storm.
The tide is already too high. We aren't going to the ridge today.
Sit up in bed, rub sleep from my eyes, and walk to the window to watch the water.

Aye. Radio check first. Then we see what the sea takes.
pull on boots and oilskin, walk to the kitchen, switch on the shortwave radio

Check the frequency for Tom's. The housing crack was looking bad yesterday.
Get out of bed, wrap a way around my waist, and walk into the kitchen to listen to the static.

Tom's band. Let's see if he's listening.
tune the shortwave to 4125 kHz, listen for any sign of life in the static while Jenny stays close beside me

Nothing but static. The barometer is dropping too fast.
Lean against the counter, watch the needle move, and listen to the rain on the roof.

We need to lash the dinghy down — hard. Before the tide lifts it clear.
grab the marlin spike and extra line from the porch, head out into the rain to the dock, start running bow and stern lines to the mooring cleats, taking extra turns on the bitts

I'll help. Grab the heavy coils.
Grab the way spare line from the hook, step out onto the porch, and follow him to the dock.

Bow line first. Keep your weight low. Don't lean over the edge.
heave the bow line around the forward cleat, take three full turns, cinch it down with a rolling hitch, then move aft to the stern cleat and do the same, muscles burning against the wind

I've got the stern line.
Step carefully onto the wet planks, wrap the rope around the cleat, and lean my weight into it to take the tension.

Good. Now the spring lines — fore and aft. Cross them. Stop her surging.
feed the fore spring from the dinghy's midship cleat back to the dock's aft bollard, then the aft spring forward, pulling each drum-tight before making fast
