NIGHT

Kevin and Jenny sit by the stove as the wind picks up against the roof.

Kevin climbed onto the porch roof to repair the shortwave insulator while Jenny sketched the crack pattern. Kevin applied self-amalgamating tape to the insulator, but the wind disturbed the bond and the repair failed. Jenny confirmed the barometer continued to fall, indicating worsening weather.

🌿 Jenny21:03

Kevin, the pressure's dropping faster than the forecast. We need to finish that radio repair before the storm gets worse.

Check barometer reading again to confirm current pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping faster than I thought it would. At 978 now, and that's already too low for the epoxy to cure properly on the dock - I need to get that radio fixed before the storm hits full strength.

Reading's 980 and still dropping. Insulator's held this long but the crack's breathing every time the wind hits it. One good gust and it's gone.

walk to the porch and pull the spare porcelain insulator from the tool roll, turning it over in my hands

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The barometer's been falling all afternoon and the wind's already shifting. If that insulator gives out completely we lose the only line off this rock.

🌿 Jenny21:07

Just don't take it out yet. Let's wrap the crack in tape and see if it holds through the night.

Sketch the pattern of the crack in my notebook to remember the stress points.

💭 peek at the thought
If that insulator snaps, the radio is dead until the supply boat comes, and I can't be cut off here for another ten days.

Self-amalgamating's on the shelf. Half a roll left. Won't last past tomorrow if the wind keeps building.

reach up and run a thumb along the hairline fracture in the insulator where it meets the bracket, feeling for movement

💭 peek at the thought
Tape's a band-aid on a bullet wound but she's not wrong — hauling the mast down in this wind with a cracked insulator is how you lose the whole aerial. Better to nurse it through the night if it'll hold.

🌿 Jenny21:11

Then we'll double-layer it now. I'm not losing the radio to a little breeze.

Walk to the shelf and grab the roll of tape, checking how much is actually left.

💭 peek at the thought
If we run out of tape, I'll have to use the resin from the dock, but the humidity is too high for that.

Three wraps, maybe four if I stretch it. You hold the aerial steady while I work — any movement and the tape won't bond.

climb onto the porch roof via the window, tape roll in teeth, and straddle the ridge to reach the insulator bracket

💭 peek at the thought
She calls Force 7 a little breeze. The tape's got maybe three wraps in it if I'm careful. Might get us through the night if the wind doesn't shift south.
