Evening and Poultice Application

Kevin returns from the garden dripping, the smell of wet earth filling the room as Jenny is ready for her ankle treatment.

The warm rain has tapered into a drizzle, leaving the air heavy with the scent of damp earth and salt. The cottage interior remains humid, and the humidity makes the wood for the projects stubbornly difficult to work with.

Ankle first. Then food.

strip off wet outer layer, hang it by the stove, fetch the basin and fresh sea beet from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's waiting. Good. The mud on my boots will dry before morning. The poultice needs changing — heat's been building under the wrap all afternoon.

Don't touch the sketches with those hands, the ink is still wet.

Wince as the water hits the infection, gripping the edge of the cot until my own turn white.

💭 peek at the thought
My skin feels too thin for this heat, and the mold is moving faster than I.

Hands are clean. Washed at the basin.

set the basin down careful, unwrap the old poultice slow, let the gauze come away without pulling

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the mold colonies again. Third night running. The ink bleeds on damp paper like the rot bleeds through the rafters. Her knuckles white on the cot frame — same grip she had when I lanced it. She doesn't make a sound. Never does.

🌿 Jenny14:13

It's still hot. The heat hasn't broken.

Close my eyes and lean my head back against the wall, breathing through my nose.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful. Almost too careful. It makes me want to scream or go completely silent.

🔧 Kevin14:14

Poultice is fresh. Mint and honey too. Going to pack it thicker this time.

mix the sea beet pulp with crushed mint leaves and honey in the tin mug, spread it generous on clean gauze, lay it over the wound and wrap firm but not tight

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's deeper than yesterday. Red line hasn't moved past my mark but the skin around it feels tighter. Swelling's pushing against the bandage edges. She's fighting it quiet — no complaints, just the breath control. Four doses of doxycycline left. Three metronidazole. That's it. No more coming.
