Evening walk to the shrine

Kevin and Jenny meet as the light fades, the rain finally stopped. They decide to head toward the north ridge to visit the stone circle.

The evening descent from the shrine was slow, the humidity clinging to the skin like a wet shroud. Jenny struggled with the throbbing in her ankle on the slick path, while Kevin kept a steady pace behind her, eyes scanning the ground for loose stones as the scent of salt grew with the rising tide.

Ready when you are.

walk toward the north ridge with Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's finally off. Air's still thick but the wind's dropped. Good enough to move. Jenny's ankle won't like the climb but she'll make it — she always does. The shrine's been sitting up there longer than either of us. Might as well see it while the light holds.

🌿 Jenny14:17

Give me a second. The path is particularly slick today.

Jenny leans heavily on her walking stick, shifting her weight to the good leg as she begins the slow ascent.

💭 peek at the thought
way own is a heartbeat pulsing with heat, and every step up this incline feels like glass under skin.

Take your time. I'm in no rush.

fall in a step behind her on the path, watching the ground for loose stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it harder than this morning. The poultice held but the joint's still hot. Should've checked it again before we left. Too late now — just match her pace and don't hover.

🌿 Jenny14:19

It's the humidity. It makes everything feel like lead.

Jenny wipes sweat and grit from her brow with the back of a hand, squinting at the silhouette of the shrine ahead.

💭 peek at the thought
If I stop moving, I think I might just melt down here and let the fever take me.

🔧 Kevin14:19

Air's not moving. Makes the sweat stay put.

keep pace behind her, boots finding the drier edges of the track

💭 peek at the thought
Humidity's the same for both of us. She's carrying more than the air weight. The stones up there have seen worse than us — they'll still be standing when we're gone.

🌿 Jenny14:21

It's like breathing wet wool.

Jenny pauses for a moment to catch her breath, clutching her thigh as the ankle throbbing spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the salt is literally eating the skin today.

🔧 Kevin14:21

Flat spot coming up by the big boulder. Good place to check the radio bearing.

shorten stride, ready to stop at the boulder ledge fifty metres up

💭 peek at the thought
That pause wasn't breath. It was the joint locking up. She won't ask to stop. I'll make the call when we hit the next level ground — give her a reason to rest that isn't her ankle.

🌿 Jenny14:23

Right. Just... give me a minute.

Jenny forces another shaky step forward, her eyes fixed on the weathered stones of the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
I just need to reach those stones before my legs give out for good.
