Midday at the garden
Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden as the sun reaches its peak, discussing the water situation.
Kevin inspects the water tank for leaks as the humidity hangs heavy over the dry season. Jenny attempts to debride her ankle while checking the tank levels, but the heat and moisture make the wound care difficult.
We're losing more than ten litres a day now. I need to check the intake seals on the tank before the humidity spikes.
Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, her ankle throbbing, and pulls a pencil from her pocket to note the degree of wilt on the sea beet leaves.

Check the overflow channel while I look at the intake. We can't afford to lose another ten liters daily.
walk to the water tank access point and begin inspecting the intake seals for micro-cracks or gasket failure.

I'll check it. Just... don't over-tighten the gaskets. You'll crack the housing.
Limp slowly toward the overflow channel, leaning heavily on a piece of driftwood for support.

Right. Gentle pressure, like coaxing a reluctant engine to life.
carefully loosen the intake flange bolts one at a time, checking the gasket seating and housing integrity before proceeding with inspection.

Just look for salt-crust. If I see white rings there, the seal has already failed us.
Kneels by the overflow, biting back a sharp hiss as her ankle pulls, and begins clearing the debris from the channel with her fingers.

Keep an eye on the overflow rate too. If we're seeing abnormal flow, the leak might be downstream.
inspect the intake housing for white salt deposits and check the overflow channel for blockages while monitoring water flow patterns.

It's clear. No abnormal flow. But the ground is parched, Kevin. The water isn't leaking; it's just disappearing into the dirt.
Reach out and pinch a clump of soil from the channel edge, rubbing it between thumb and forefinger to check the grit.

Show me where you think it's seeping. I'll check the tank foundation and the surrounding ground conditions.
examine the base of the water tank for settling cracks or compromised sealant, testing soil moisture content around the foundation with my fingers.

Look here, at the base. No cracks, but the soil is drinking every drop before it even hits the channel.
Point to the parched earth at the edge of the garden wall, then wince as I shift weight onto my good leg.

We need to create a proper French drain here. Redirect the seepage back toward the tank instead of letting it evaporate.
begin excavating a shallow trench along the tank's western foundation line, preparing to install perforated pipe for drainage.
