Evening Meal and Night Watch
Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the temperature finally drops, sharing the last of the light for the day.
The humidity remains heavy over the cottage as the wind shifts to the east. Kevin and Jenny sit through the rising tide, discussing the loss of cedar wood and the salt spray beginning to threaten the north ridge garden beds.
It's finally cooling down. I can actually feel the breeze through the walls.
Limp slowly toward the kitchen table and carefully hoist my swollen ankle up onto a chair.

Barometer's holding. 1013. Might get a proper night's sleep.
Set the tin mug of broth on the table beside her chair, then pull out the other chair and sit heavily, rubbing the heel of my hand against my lower back.

Don't bet on the sleep. The humidity is still thick enough to chew.
Reach for the tin mug and take a slow, cautious sip of the warm broth.

Wind's east now. Was west all afternoon. That's something.
Reach for the kettle on the stove, top off my own mug, then let the silence settle while the broth steams.

East wind means the salt spray will hit the north ridge beds. I'll need to check the shade cloth anchors in the morning.
Set the mug down and gently probe the edge of the bandage on my ankle with a finger.

Oak stakes at the shed. Cut six yesterday. Cedar's gone — crab took the lot.
Lean forward, elbows on knees, and watch the steam curl off my mug without drinking.
