Waiting out the storm

The rain shows no sign of slowing as the pressure continues to drop. You and Jenny huddle in the kitchen, listening to the water off the roof.

Kevin and Jenny spend the afternoon inside the cottage as the warm rain falls and the pressure continues to drop. Kevin wraps a wool blanket around Jenny's swollen ankle while they discuss the worsening weather and the approaching supply boat.

🌿 Jenny06:37

The barometer is dropping too fast. We aren't going anywhere before the boat.

Wrap the ankle tighter with a dry cloth despite the throbbing pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If this humidity doesn't break, the infection is just going to reach the bone. I can't even debride it properly in this soup.

🔧 Kevin06:37

No. We're not.

Check the radio battery charge and verify the aerial lead is still sealed at the wall penetration.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stating facts, not asking. The barometer's fallen four millibars since I looked last — 988 to 984 in two hours. That's not weather moving through. That's weather parking on top of us. The boat won't cross in this. She knows it. I know it. Saying it out loud doesn't change the math.

🌿 Jenny06:39

Just need the salt to stay out for once.

Reach for the heirloom seed tin on the table, tracing the heavily edge with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the radio, but I'm rotting from the inside out.

🔧 Kevin06:39

Tin's on the stove shelf. Newspaper under it. Heat keeps the damp off. Seal's waxed.

Pour two mugs of coffee from the pot on the stove, set one beside the tin for her.

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's seal held through the last blow. It'll hold this one if I don't have to move it. She's worried about the heirlooms — tomato, pepper, sea beet, basil — eight months of selection in that rusted box. Salt's the enemy. Humidity's the thief. She traces the seam like she's checking a pulse.

🌿 Jenny06:40

Thanks.

Pick up the warm mug and hold it against my cheek, closing my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He remembers where I put it. At least he's paying attention to the things that matter to me.

🔧 Kevin06:40

Blanket's on the hook by the door.

Pull the wool blanket off the hook and drape it over her shoulders, tucking it around the ankle without touching the wrap.

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold. The ankle's pulling heat from the rest of her. Fever or just the damp in her bones — hard to tell. The mug warms her face but her fingers are white at the knuckles. I should've kept the blanket closer.

🌿 Jenny06:42

I'm okay. I just... I hate feeling this useless.

Lean back into the chair and take a slow, shaking sip of the coffee.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful. He knows it hurts to touch.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin06:42

You're not useless. You're hurt. There's a difference.

Sit opposite her at the table, mug in hand, and listen to the wind hit the shutters.

💭 peek at the thought
Useless. She mapped the north ridge Carex transect solo while I was under the Yanmar. She debrided her own ankle at low tide with a fever climbing. She catalogued sea beet salt gland densities across three elevation zones while the infection tracked toward her groin. She's held the garden together through rot and crabs and salt. Useless isn't the word. Useless is the lie the quiet tells when your hands are tied.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:45

Right.

Look down at the seed tin, wondering if the seeds inside are molding in the damp air.

💭 peek at the thought
A difference that feels very small when you're stuck in a stone box rotting.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:45

They're dry. Checked at first light. Wax paper, oilskin, paper buffer. Tin's hot to touch from the stove.

Tap the tin lid once with a fingertip — a dull, warm sound — and let the silence sit.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not looking at the tin. She's looking through it. The seeds are dry — waxed paper, oilskin wrap, newspaper buffer, stove heat rising. I checked this morning. She knows I checked. But knowing and watching are different animals when the air's this thick and the barometer won't stop falling.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:47

Good.

Reach out and rest my hand on the metal of the tin, letting the warmth soak into my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the seeds are safe. way if I'm not.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:47

Storm won't last forever.

Refill her mug from the pot, then top my own, and set the pot back on the stove's warm edge.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand on the tin. My hand on the mug. The rain on the roof. The barometer at 984 and still dropping. The supply boat five days out if it comes at all. The ankle. The silence where Tom's voice should be. She's grounding herself on a seed tin because everything else is sliding.
