← Day 89

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday at the dock and north cliffs

Kevin is at the dock aligning the Yanmar to the dinghy transom; Jenny is on the north cliffs collecting Carex samples and succulents.

The rain continues its steady, heavy rhythmic drumming against the kitchen roof and the dock planks. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the tide pools beneath the cliffs. The water tank is at its absolute limit, filled over and leaving no margin for the coming downpour.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the slick dock planks, the Yanmar cradle rocked by swell, aligning the engine mount holes with the transom bracket. Rain sheets off your oilskin as you thread the stainless bolts through, fingers numb. The dinghy tugs at its painter, mast still unstepped, sail folded in the bilge.

🔧 Kevin21:48

Kevin — torque the four mount bolts to 35Nm in a cross pattern, then pull the starter cord to verify the engine turns over on the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Bolts threading clean. Transom bracket holds. Need the torque wrench at 35Nm once she's seated, then the starter cord test. Mast can wait — engine first.

🔧 Kevin21:53

Kevin — slide the bronze prop shaft sleeve onto the shaft, align the coupler, then inspect the seacock for corrosion and operate the handle to confirm it opens and closes freely

💭 peek at the thought
Engine seated, bolts torqued. Starter cord pulled clean — compression feels good. Now the prop shaft sleeve and seacock check before launch. Rain’s easing; tide’s still falling.

🔧 Kevin21:56

Kevin — step the spruce mast into the tabernacle, pin it, then bend on the folded sail from the bilge and hank it to the forestay

💭 peek at the thought
Sleeve seated, coupler aligned, seacock cycles clean — no binding, no weep at the flange. Dinghy's light in the water now the engine's aboard. Mast and sail next, then a wet launch at slack.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You move along the cliff path above the north shore, the wind tearing at your jacket, stopping at each cairn to record Carex density in your notebook. Succulents cling to the basalt ledges, salt spray glazing their leaves. The tide is high, waves booming against the cliff foot, the jellyfish bloom a pale smear in the bay below.

🌿 Jenny21:47

Jenny — sketch the cross-section of a succulent leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again; if this rain doesn't break by tomorrow, the epoxy is truly lost.

🌿 Jenny21:51

Jenny — walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling again; I should check the salt beef before the light fails completely.

🌿 Jenny21:55

Jenny — look through the rain at the harbor.

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin is still down at the dock; I need to see if he's coming in soon.
