Pre-Storm Pressure
Kevin sits at the table checking the barometer while Jenny rests her ankle in a basin of salt water. The air is heavy with humidity, and the clouds are beginning to darken over the north ridge.
Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table as the sky thickens and the pressure holds steady. Kevin warns that the steady pressure is a bad sign of a storm building before the supply boat arrives. They discuss the work that must be finished before Jenny's ankle potentially worsens further.
It's not moving. The pressure.
Lean back against the cot and slowly shift the ankle in the water, wincing.

Holding steady's the worst sign. Means the front's stacking up out there.
Pour coffee into the second tin mug and set it beside her on the table, then check the radio battery charge on the shelf.

I can't just sit here while the sky turns that color.
Reach for the coffee mug, fingers brushing against the cool metal.

Sky's not your problem. The trench is holding. Garden tarp's battened. Dock bolts torqued. You sit, you heal, the boat comes in three days.
Pull the chair out opposite her and sit, mug in hand, watching the porch door where the cloud bank presses against the glass.

I'm not a piece of dock timber, Kevin.
Set the coffee mug down with a sharp clink and look him straight in the eye.

Didn't say you were. Said the work's done that needs doing before the boat. Your ankle rots, we lose the garden *and* the radio watch. That's the math.
Hold her gaze, steady, then glance down at the mug — steam curling — and back up.
