The Heavy Calm before the Rain

Kevin returns with the poultice as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust.

The humidity hangs heavy over the cottage as the sky darkens to a bruised purple. Kevin applies the sea beet-and-honey poultice to Jenny's ankle, the cooling herbs offering a momentary reprieve from the throbbing heat. The wind picks up, bringing a heavy spruce branch crashing down across the main path, blocking the route to the spring.

About time.

Lean back against the porch wall and extend the swollen ankle toward him.

Finally. The rain is here, but it's just more moisture for the rot to feed on.

Mint's fresh. Sea beet from the upper terrace — less salt.

kneel beside her, unwrap the gauze, spread the sea beet-mint-honey poultice over the swollen ankle, re-wrap with clean gauze, secure the end with a strip of cloth

💭 peek at the thought
Her tone's lighter than yesterday. Ankle's still hot to touch but the red line hasn't crossed the ink mark. Poultice needs to go on before the rain drives us inside.

Thanks.

Close eyes and let out a long, shaky breath as the coolness of the poultice hits the skin.

He's so precise. It's almost infuriating how he treats me like a piece of equipment that needs maintenance.

Red line hasn't moved since morning. That's something.

sit back on heels, wipe hands on trousers, glance at the sky where clouds are bruising darker

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding tension in her shoulders. The antibiotics are working but the infection's stubborn. Two days until the boat — if it comes.
